Good Will Hunting

-review-

I do not know about you, but to me, about 90% of the movies you can see in cinemas
nowadays are dull. I know that it is mostly about popcorn and soda, hanging out with friends, and
having fun, but in my 30s, I still cannot get rid of the idea that a movie should be not just about
visuals and the wow-effect, but also about deep emotions and contemplation.
Today I am reviewing a movie that has been living deeply in my heart since I first watched it
in 2020, Good Will Hunting. It is a film about a genius boy, played by Matt Damon, who didn’t
appreciate his wonderful mind enough, ending up as a janitor at MIT. He loves to party and hang
around the old neighbourhood. Stellan Skarsgard plays Lambeau, the professor, who offers a prize
to any student who can solve a difficult problem. The next morning, the answer is written on a
blackboard standing in the hall. Who claims credit? None of the students does. A few days later,
Lambeau catches Will Hunting (Damon) at the board and realizes he's the author--a natural
mathematical genius who can intuitively see through the thorniest problems. Lambeau wants to help
Will, to get him into school, maybe, or collaborate with him. But before that can take place, Will
and some buddies are cruising the old neighborhood and beat up a guy. Will also hammers on the
cops a little and is jailed. He's a tough nut. He sees nothing wrong with spending his whole life
hanging out with his friends, quaffing a few beers, holding down a blue-collar job. He sees romance
in being an honest bricklayer, but none in being a professor of mathematics--maybe because
bricklaying is work, and, for him, math isn't. After insisting, Lambeau convinced Will to join him in
his work, but for that he had to go to a therapist every week. The therapist, played by Robin
Williams, succeded in fixing his mental health making him a way better person. I am not going to
give you more details of the movie because I would like you to find out what happens next.
Summing it all up, Will is an underrated genius who hasn’t been taking advantage of his
cleverness all this years because of how his parents treated him in his childhood. Since than he has
started a hooligan life, beating up other people, stealing and other. The only real friend he ever had
that supported him and wanted him to become a successful man is Chuckie, played by Ben Afflek.
The movie itself shows us how much the influence of our past has on us. Let’s take it like this. If
Will’s parents were supportive and all he would have gone to a great university and would have
become more than he is now. In this case, he was lucky that Lambeau and the therapist found Will
because they saved his future by starting to work with him and slowly changing him into a
completely different person.
In my opinion, I love this film because it gives us reasons to belive in ourselves even if bad
things happen in the course of out life. Also, it shows that if you get close to the right persons a lot
from our life could change in better.
In conclusion, if you enjoy watching dramatic, biographic movies, “Good Will Hunting” is
one that I promise you will enjoy.
