“Jacques’ La Magie”

Pairs with “Chaos in Paris”

The sun shone brightly and the sky was clear, I was
busily running from tree to tree. I tried not to be seen,
for this was something I was waiting to do for my entire
lifetime. Now was not the time to ruin it. When I finally
sneaked by the guards, I put on my hat and said to a
pudgy factory worker,

“Do you know where the main room is?”

Looking at my dapper suit, the man thought that I

was an important magician to perform for the workers,
so he led me in. When I was finally there, I sneakily
locked the door.

At first, everyone paused at the sight of me, but

then when I started doing magic tricks, they stared at
me… interested. For my first trick, I turned a lever and
made the whole building start making noise but snapped
my fingers and the noise stopped. Another was putting
gloves in a furnace and making them come back out
unburned! Then, for best the magic tricks (the men were
getting antsy), I had a bottle of alcohol and spattered
it on the floor, yet the bottle never emptied. For
another trick, I dropped a lighter in it and the alcohol
did not light. I continued performing more tricks, but
the last one was not seen because the building was
filling with smoke.

No one could get out.

Panic started. Someone shouted, “Where's the
magician?!”

But I was gone.

Outside I stood proudly. I was proud because I had

finally finished the goal of my lifetime: killing
Julius O’Malley. I sped out of there before anyone could
see me again. The sky was clear…no it was not, for it
was filled with smoke.

I killed Julius O'Malley because he had enough

money to go to the Paris World Fair. With his money, I
could go and steal a glimpse-or maybe spend days just
looking at the Eiffel Tower, climbing it. I was only 32
and yet the finest magician in all of France - “ Jacques
La magie”. Ha! I had just performed a magic trick to some
factory workers that actually killed them.
***
A storm was glaring down at me as if it threatened
to rain. I soon caught up with that brat, James. Julius
O’Malley’s heir was prone to being mischievous and a
pain in my side.
I had planned to steal O’Malley’s money from the
bank before James got involved, but the boy beat me to
the bank. Now I had chased him to the docks. I watched as
he began to climb aboard a boat. Not willing to lose my
prey, I jumped, too.
I had brought some rope just in case, and I did not
actually think I needed it, but now it was obvious that
I would have to use it.
It was easy. In seconds I had the boy caught in a
snare, I shoved a gag in his mouth, and steered the boat
to shore.
Upon our arrival, my henchmen came rushing over
and grabbed the boy harshly and shoved him into a
waiting carriage.
From there, I brought him to my castle which was 6
hours away. It was the famous Château de Châteaubriant
and chained him up.
***
When I saw the Paris World Fair on the news I could
not resist going, as I would love to see the Eiffel
Tower. I thought that the boy might need a little fresh
air – I instructed the maid to let James out of the
dungeons and make him assist her in cleaning the
bathrooms.

***

The sun shone brightly through the sky, and the

birds twittered. I spent 36 days admiring the Paris
World Fair but most of all the building of the Eiffel
Tower!
Hours crept into days into weeks, and finally it
was almost done. I found an old worker suit on the
street, so I decided I could get a peak of what was going
on, so, after donning the suit, I went up the stairs.

***

I heard a noise like a pitter patter. I thought, No

one should be creeping in here, so I turned around. I
saw the bratty boy smudged in dirt from who knows
where. I raised my pistol Shoot, you idiot, shoot, I said
to myself, but I just could not kill that boy.
I don't know how to explain it.

He ran so surprisingly fast that he passed me – I

did not even know what to do, I was shocked at his speed!
But I still chased him. Finally, I got to the top of the
Eiffel where there were huge gaps between the metal
platform. I tried to grab the bratty boy but ended up
tripping because he pushed me through a gap: “CLUNK.”
I was barely hanging on. The only thing that kept
me alive was hanging by my hand. Blood streaked from my
head. I must have hit metal when I fell.
I had not really expected the boy to try to kill me.
I had always thought he was a snotty boy – I just wanted
to get his money. Now, I could see he was nothing short
of a monster.
I realized, too, what I had done. Killing those
workers for just some money, capturing a young boy,
even willing to kill him. I realized that I was a
monster inside.
Then I called out to him in a raspy voice, “Help me,
my son. Forgive me for I am sorry.”
The bratty boy stepped up. It was then I knew he was
not going to save me. It was then I knew that this was
the end.
I was right.
