SIMPLE PAST TENSE
Simple Past Tense is used to talk about finished actions that
happened at a specific time in the past.
(+) S + V2 + Object
(-) S + did + not + V1
(?) Did + S + V1 ?

There are two types of Verbs in using simple past tense :

1. Regular verb (Kata kerja beraturan)
2. Irregular verbs ( Kata kerja tidak beraturan)

Kita harus menambahkan -ed di akhir kata kerja pada

regular verb, sedangkan irregular verb memiliki bentuk
tersendiri.
Examples :
 I studied English (regular verb)
 Mom bought a bag for me (irregular verb)
 I wrote a letter (irregular verb)

Pada kalimat nominal atau kalimat yang tidak

menggunakan kata kerja tetapi menggunakan kata kerja
bantu (to be)/Auxiliary Verb, menggunakan rumus :
(+) S + was/were + adjective/noun/adverb
(-) S + was/were + not + adjective/noun/adverb
(?) Was/were + S + adjective/noun/adverb?
Was I, She, He, It
Were You, We, They

Examples :
1. They were in the library
2. Ms. Nadia was a teacher in 2007

There are some rules in using Simple Past Tense in

sentences :
1. It is used to say something which happened once in
the past (digunakan untuk mengatakan sesuatu yang
terjadi satu kali di masa lampau)
Examples :
I graduated from Junior High School in 2008
I entered university in 2011
2. It is used to say something which happened again and
again in the past (digunakan untuk mengatakan
sesuatu yang terjadi berulang-ulang di masa lampau)
Examples :
a. When I was five, my grandmother used to give a
story book.
b. We used to enjoy visiting bookstore.
3. It is used to say something which was true for some
time in the past (untuk mengatakan sesuatu yang
benar untuk beberapa lama di masa lampau)
Examples :
a. I lived in Bandung for four years
b. She enjoyed playing basketball when she was in
senior high school
4. Simple Past Tense often uses ago in the sentences
(sering menggunakan “ago” dalam kalimat)
Examples :
a. I met my old friend two weeks ago
b. She told me the truth three days ago
