Detailed Lesson Plan in Grade 09 (Geometry)

I. Objectives : At the end of the lesson, students are expected to:

1. show the relationship of the sides of the triangle to develop Pythagorean
Theorem ;
2. state and explain Pythagorean Theorem;
3. find missing sides of right triangles using Pythagorean Theorem; and
4. apply the Pythagorean Theorem to real-life problems.

II. Subject Matter: Pythagorean Theorem

Materials: charts, strips, pictures, ruler, chalk

1. Drill

Good morning class! Good morning sir!

I am so glad to see you all in this
special session with me.
I am Sir Hermando D. Lozano and I
am your Math teacher for today. Before we
proceed to our lesson proper, let’s have first a
game. I will divide the class into four groups.
The first group will be Group Socrates, the
second group will be Group Plato, the third
group will be Group Aristotle and the fourth
group will be Group Einstein. The game is
entitled “MATH QUIZ bowl.”
Let us recall your previous
learnings/concepts through math quiz bowl.
With your groupings, I will give each group an
illustration board and a chalk for you to write
the letter of your answer. I will read the
question twice and after 5 seconds you’ll raise
your answers. Each question is worth 2 points.
The group who can gain more points will be Yes, Sir!
declared as the winner.
Are my instructions clear, class?

6. What do we call a statement in geometry that Group _____, sir!
a. Postulate b. Theorem

What group is the winner class?

Let us give them an angel clap.

2. Motivation/Review
Class, with the same group, we’ll
have another game. This game is called “4 PICS,
2 WORDS”. Each group has the chance to
answer it correctly, but you have to raise your
flaglet. The first group who can raise their
flaglet will be the one to be accepted by teacher
to answer. If the answer is correct you will
receive the 10 points. However, if the answer is Yes, Sir!
incorrect, other groups have the chance to
answer it correctly and acquire the points. Am I
understood class?

B. Developmental Activities
1. Setting of Standards
Now, let’s have first agreement. For us to
really understand our lesson today, let us listen
attentively and participate well in our activities.
Am I clear class?

2. Discussion
Activity 1.
With the same groupings, each group
will be given one figure, ruler and marker. What
you are going to do is to measure the length of
its sides. With an accompanying chart are
questions to be answered. After answering Team Aristotle

those questions, select one representative in
your group to explain your work. You will be
given 5 minutes to answer the questions and 5 9 15
minutes to explain your work.

Side of Right Triangle Length of the Side (Length of the Side)2

Shorter leg (a)
Longer leg (b)
Hypotenuse (c)

Guide Questions:
1. Given the right triangle, complete the table above.
2. Add the squares of the two legs and relate or equate it to the square of the hypotenuse.
What is their relation?
3. Write the relation to mathematical statement.

In a right triangle, the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the
What do you think is the name of this
squares of the legs. c2 = a2 + b2 where c is the hypotenuse.

statement? We have mention the name in our

previous activity. What is it? Pythagoras
What do you call a statement that needs to be
proven? Theorem

Joining the terms, it will be come? Pythagorean Theorem

A little trivia, Pythagoras is a Greek Mathematician
who investigate this type of theorem. He almost
spent all of his time finding the things that ‘cause
mystery in this world. This famous theorem was
then named after him by his followers.

Activity 2.
Since, we already know what Pythagorean
Theorem is, let us try some problems to test the
formula.

A part of a right triangle is missing, can we Yes sir!
find the missing side? The Pythagorean Theorem.
What should we use?

Suppose the hypotenuse is missing given
that the height(a) of a right triangle is 9 inches
and the base(b) is 12 inches. What is the length Using the Pythagorean Theorem.
of the hypotenuse? Substitute and then simplify.
What we are going to use? c2 = a2 + b2
How are we going to solve it? c2 = 92 + 122
c2 = 81 + 144
c2 = 225
c = 15

Okay, Very Good Charlie.

Yes, sir!
What if , one of the legs is missing, can we still
find it?
I have here a problem. c2 = a2 + b2
If b = 8 and c= 10. What is the shorter side? 102 = a2 + 82
Okay, Joshua 100 = a2 + 64
100 – 64 = a2
36 = a2
6=a

Very Good, Joshua.

C. Concluding Activities
1. Generalization About Pythagorean Theorem Sir!
Again class, what have we tackled this Pythagorean Theorem states that the square of
day? the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the square
What can you conclude about it? of the 2 legs.

c2 = a2 + b2
How is Pythagorean Theorem
expressed? Right Triangle
What type of triangle does Pythagorean
Theorem used? No
Is it applicable to other type of
triangles?

2. Application
At this point, I have met this painter of a
building, he then states that “If the foot of 30-
meter ladder is placed 18 meters away from a c2 = a2 + b2
building, how high up of the building will the 302 = 182 + b2
ladder reach? 900 = 324 + b2
900 – 324 = b2
576 = b2
24 = b

IV. Evaluation

2. b =24 , c = 26 , a = ?
3. a = 16 , c = 20 , b = ?

V. Assignment
Directions: Use the Pythagorean Theorem to solve the real-life problem.
1. A TV Tower is 28-meter high. Wire braces attached from the tip of the tower anchored 21-
meter away from the base. Find the length of the wire brace?
