MECHANICS AND CRITERIA FOR JUDGING THE ESSAY WRITING CONTEST IN THE

CELEBRATION OF THE 56th CAS FOUNDING ANNIVERSARY-FESTIVAL OF ARTS AND

SCIENCES

1. The Essay Writing Competition, as one of the activities of the CAS Founding Anniversary-
Festival of Arts and Sciences, is
open to all CAS-UNP undergraduate students enrolled during the second term of AY 2021-
2022.
2. All participants are required to register first at https://forms.gle/pwmGRoCru5w7GWD49
before the competition proper.
3. The theme of the essay writing contest is, "CAS Beyond Boundaries: Embodying Social
Responsibility through Community Engagement." Participants are
discouraged to use the theme as the title of essay.
4. Participants may write their piece in any of the following medium: English, Filipino
and Ilokano. There will be a separate judging panel for English category and for
Filipino and Ilokano category.
5. Entries must have at least 1,000 words but must not exceed 1,500 words. Three
percent of the score in the structure criterion shall be deducted if it exceeds 1,500
words.
6. All essays must be original and not have been previously published.
7. All entries must follow the specifications below:
Paper size: A4 bond paper
Font style: Tahoma (title must be in bold text)
Font size: 12
Spacing: 1.5
Alignment: justified
Margin: 1 inch margin on each side
8. All entries, in soft copy, should be submitted at

9. Entries must be anonymous or without any indication of authorship beneath the title
of the essay.
10. All entries will be judged based on the following criteria:
• Relevance to the Theme - 35 %
• Originality - 30 %
• Structure - 20%
. Style -15%
Total 100%
11. The final ranking shall be based on the average rank garnered by the contestants.
12. In case of a tie, the decision shall be based on the first criterion. If it fails to break the
tie, the next criterion shall be used, and so on until no more ties exist.
13. All entries shall be automatically become properties of the sponsoring organization
(CAS-DLH).
14. The three highest scores in each category will be awarded 1 st, 2nd and 3rd placers
respectively and shall receive Certificates of Recognition. All non-winners shall receive
Certificates of Participation.
15. The decision of the board of judges is final and irrevocable.
