Introduction
To get your CDL it’s necessary to pass 3 exams at the DPS.
1. Pretrip inspection.
2. Maneuvers skills ( Backing up, offset and parallel parking)
3. Driving skills test.
To pass the pre trip inspection you will be required to learn the basis
of the truck and trailer, such as the sections with their own parts
and inspect them for the DPS personnel in proper way.
*If you fail 3 times the maneuvers skills or driving skills you will be
required to start over again from the inspection.
DPS personnel will ask you for these documents the day of your test:

In between the apron and the fifth wheel plate make sure there’s no gap in
between, grease all times and enough clearance ( space ) from the frame to
the landing gear to prevent steering problems.

Before going inside your in-cab ask to the examiner if please he/she could
help you to check your outside lights.

4. Release (push in) both vales (red and yellow) to clean/ stabilize air
system and must wait 10 seconds.
Brake test:
1. 4 psi test:
Use stop watch. Hold your service brake for 1 minute and should not loss
more than 4 psi in that minute.
Pump the service brake several times until the low warning light show up.
Light should come on before 60 psi.
Pump the service brake several times until the red/yellow valves pop out
in between 20-45 psi.
Recovery test:
Perform a safety start (neutral, clutch, turn on the engine). Must accelerate
to 15,000 rpm’s for fastest recovery. Recovery range should be done when
the governor valve cut off at 125 psi.

3. Choose any red or yellow vale to press in, 3rd gear, use only clutch, start
releasing the clutch until tug is felt. After the tug is felt press the clutch back
right away.
1. Service brake must be tested by accelerating to 5 mph and then stop. Let
know the officer that speedometer works properly and there was no play on
steering wheel during the test.
2. Perform a straight backing reposition. Use 4-way flashers and honk before
backing.
3. Ask the officer if there’s any more time left so it can be used wisely.
