CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

This is to report on the six months SIWES program which contains in it a well
detailed and brief explanation of the work done by the student during the six
months industrial training program, a brief background of SIWES, brief
information about the establishment where I carried out my industrial training
SIWES program. The experiences gained and some challenges encountered during
the training and other findings are listed out.

This is a program organized by the SIWES management to bridge the gap between
theory and practical . The period of this industrial training lasted for six (6)
months from the month of Octoberr, 14 2021 to May, 16 2022 in which the
students worked in their various units/field of study. I carried out my six (6)
months SIWES at Obinna automobile engineering sales and services umunze . It is
a program to help students perform better in the future. This industrial training
program is organized for students in Engineering and technology departments,
sciences, Agriculture and other professional areas in the tertiary institutions.
BRIEF HISTORY OF SIWES

The Students' Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES), was established by

Industrial Training Fund (ITF) in the year 1973 to acquaint the Students with the
skill of handling Industrial machines and equipment. The scheme exposed
students to industry - based skills necessary for smooth transition from the
classroom to the field of work. SIWES prepared and exposed Students of
Universities, Polytechnics, Colleges of education and other institutions for the
Industrial work situation they are likely to meet after school. The Scheme affords
Students the opportunity of familiarizing and exposing themselves to handling of
machines and equipments that are usually available in their institutions.

The Industrial Training Fund (ITF) funded the scheme during the formative years.
However, the board (ITF) due to financial problems couldn't fund further,
withdrew from the Scheme in 1978. The Federal government having noted the
situation and seeing the importance of the industrial training handed over the
Scheme to the National Universities Commission (NUC) and to the National Board
for Technical Education (NBTE) in 1979. Then in November 1984, the
implementation and management of the Scheme was reverted again to ITF with
the funding to be borne by the Federal Government.

Involvement in this SIWES has become a great condition for the award of diploma
and degree certificates in a specified area in most institutions. The Industrial
Training Fund outlined the objectives of this training as;

1. Providing avenue for Students in Institutions of higher Learning to

acquire Industrial training skills and experience in their course of study.
2. Exposing Students to working methods and techniques in handling
machines and equipments that may not be available in their institutions.

3. To make the transition from school told the field of work easier and
enhance Students contacts for later job placement in the future.

4. Providing Students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge in real

work situation thereby bridging the Gap between theory and practical.

5. To enlist and strengthen employers involvement in the entire

educational process and prepare Students for employment after
graduation.
