Flipping in the Ten Frame

Goals: be familiar with ten frames, subitizing and accuracy with counting,
know a number is built up of smaller numbers, and
using visual memory to learn the number bonds to 10 in any position

Materials: six-sided die and ten two color counters for each participant, ten frame mat,
next level: use a 10-sided number cube, Cuisenaire rods to show the ten bonds

Activity: to start put ten two color counters with the same color up on the ten frame, roll the
number cube and flip over the number of counters to show the other color,

you may choose which counters to flip; for the next roll proceed from this new
combination to get different bonds, both ten frames show 10 = 7 + 3

Model 1, add say "of my 10 counters, 7 are red and 3 are yellow" or "10 is 7 + 3" (not 3+7 = 10)

write all number-bonds for 10 you find during the process of the game: 10 = ... + ...

Model 2, subtr. "if I take 7 red ones from 10 (and actually do the move), I have 3 yellow left over"

Model 3, even after flipping rearrange the counters so same colors are next to each other,
show that for two even numbers you can make pairs with similar colors, for an odd
number a yellow and red are next to each other: "the two odd ones team up together"

instead of the number sentence say: I see an odd number red counters and an odd
number yellow counters (point), together there are ten counters and that's even

Student: roll number cube, flip counters, and say the number sentence (choose add, subtract,
odd/even), when proficient use Cuisenaire rods to show the corresponding ten bonds

Game: do five turns, rolling the number cube and turning over the counters each on your own ten
frame and check if your student's and your frame match. You don't need to flip only counters of one,
color you may choose to flip one or a few red and yellow counters.
