Handout 7

Read the following lesson outline. Note down what, and how a teacher
adapts parts of the textbook to suit her students.
LESSON OUTLINE

1. PRE-SPEAKING

a. Ask Ss to match pictures with words:

1. Money goes to money 2. Magpie /ˈmaɡpʌɪ/ 3. Clover plant /ˈkləʊvə plɑːnt/

4. Figure skating 5. Beetroot /ˈbiːtruːt/ 6. Samovar /ˈsaməvɑː/

a. Ask Ss to imagine that they are on a cultural ship and they represent
their countries and they are to introduce their countries to others:
• Tell Ss that they represent their countries on a culture ship.
• Give each of them a piece of information from a country (either Russia or the UK)
with a picture of flag on the back of the paper. Ask them to read in 1 minute and
take notes of information they are interested in. (see materials in handout 6)

2. WHILE –SPEAKING

a. Pair and share

 Ask Ss to pair and share with someone who holds the same category of information
of the same country as theirs, talk about what they are interested in.

b. Group discussion

 Ask Ss to gather in groups of six (the same category and the same country) and say
which information that interests them the most, using the given language prompt.
 Ask Ss to take notes of what their friends say in the table.
c. Presentation
 Ask Ss to form new groups. Make sure that each new group has at least 3
members of three categories of information of the same country.
 In groups, Ss prepare and deliver a presentation about their country in front of
other members on the ship.
 Remind Ss to emphasize the “selling point” by using superlative structures.

3. POST –SPEAKING
 Ask Ss to comment each other on the mini-presentation in terms of
vocabulary, grammar, organization and pronunciation and then vote for
the best presentation.
