1. X is continous random variable of oil saturation in a reservoir that is described by the following
probability density function,
10 − 50𝑥, 0 < 𝑥 ≤ 0.2
𝑓(𝑥) = {
0, 𝑒𝑙𝑠𝑒𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒
a. Verify that 𝑓(𝑥) is a density function.
b. Find the probability of oil saturation between 0.3 and 0.5.
c. Find the probability of oil saturation between 0.1 and 0.3.
d. Find the mean of oil saturation!

2. A normal distribution of porosity has a data mean of 0.18 and a variance of 0.0025.
a. Calculate the probability value that the porosity will be between 0.14 and 0.21?
b. The rock with a porosity of less than 12% is believed to be non-reservoir rock. Calculate
the probability that the rock at a given location will have a porosity of less than 12%?
c. The probability that the porosity greater than x is 27%. Find x!
d. We only need 92% “best” data to be analyzed and the numbers are closer to the average.
If the specification of the data distribution is porosity mean (0.18) ± k, determine the
value of k.
e. On the other hand, if we need data with distribution 0.18 ± 0.03, how many data (in
percentage) will be unused?

3. On the measurement of water saturation of rocks, we have the result that the data is log-
normally distributed with mean 0.4 and variance 0.0016. What is the probability that the
value of water saturation at a given location will exceed 67%?
