Alice in wonderland

Read the story. Then answer the questions.

It was a warm summer day and Alice was getting bored sitting beside
her sister, suddenly, a little White Rabbit with pink eyes ran in
front of her shouting, “Oh dear, I'm late," and then disappeared
down a rabbit's hole. "I must find out why he's in such a hurry!"
cried Alice. She ran to the rabbit's hole and peeped through the
entrance. The hole dropped suddenly and Alice fell. Finally she
landed in a narrow hallway with doors of many sizes. On a table,
Alice found a tiny gold key and a green bottle that said "DRINK
ME" she drank it. Alice began to shrink until she was no bigger
than a doll. She opened the door and quickly ran through it. "What
a splendid garden!" she exclaimed. But the excitement soon wore
off. "I want to be big again," she shouted. Alice went looking
for help. Soon, she saw a green caterpillar. He was sitting on the
top of a large mushroom. "One side make you big, the other side
make you small, the mushroom," he answered. Alice ate a piece of
the mushroom. “Thank goodness, I'm growing!" Alice continued her
walk. In the middle of a field the Queen of Hearts was playing
croquet. "Have you ever played croquet?" the Queen asked Alice.
"Yes," Alice answered. "Play with me!" ordered the Queen. “And
let me win or I'll have your head!" "Off with her head!" cried the
Queen. Alice felt someone touch her shoulder, "Wake up. You've
been sleeping for too long," said her sister softly. "I had a
strange dream," said Alice.

Olive Oil

Read the passage. Then answer the questions.

Oil is obtained from seeds of various sorts and from certain
kinds of fruit, but the most highly esteemed oil for the table,
the very queen of oils, is that which we get from the olive, the
fruit of the olive-tree. In size it is not a tall tree, usually
attaining about twice the height of a man. Its head is rounded,
not very dense in growth, its leaves are narrow, of an ashen-
green color, and do not fall in winter. The olive is green at
first. The flesh covering its hard stone, which is pointed at
both ends, has the most disagreeable taste you can imagine.
Later when the winter comes, in November and December, olives
change from green to reddish, and finally turn black. Then the
skin wrinkles and the flesh ripen, losing its tartness and
becoming rich in oil. That is the time for harvesting the fruit.
Olives that are black, very ripe, and wrinkled, can at a pinch
be eaten just as they come from the tree, in spite of a slight
harshness of flavor. Sometimes they are merely soaked in salt
water. But however, they may be prepared, black olives are
never equal to green ones. The most ill-flavored olives as they
hang on the tree are the best when once freed of their
extremely disagreeable taste. Lastly the olives, now a

beautifully green color and an agreeable taste, are salted down
in brine, which ensures their preservation and corrects any undo
sweetness of flavor.

The Secret Lake

This was Evie’s first trip to the lake. Molly had brought her along. She

wanted to show Evie her favorite place to swim. It was a secret place that

Molly hadn’t shared with many other people.

“How did you find this place?” Evie asked as they walked.

“My parents brought me here when I was younger,” Molly replied.

“My legs are getting tired,” Evie said, stepping over a fallen log.

“It’s worth the walk, trust me,” said Molly.

Having just passed the small stream, Molly knew they were now almost

there. Not many people visited the lake, so the path was overgrown. Only

a faint track was visible. Vines hung low overhead and tree branches

dangled awkwardly, forcing the girls to duck and weave.

Molly reached the clearing first. Evie was close behind her.

“Wow!” Evie gasped. “The lake is beautiful!”

7
The girls dropped their bags at the water’s edge and waded into the
cool water. Closing her eyes, Molly began tofloat on her back. She could
hear the call of a bird in the distance. Molly smiled. She loved how peaceful
it was.

1. How did Molly know when they were almost there?

2. Who saw the lake first?

3. How did Molly first find the secret lake?

4. Which word from the text means ‘unclear’?

5. Why was the path to the lake overgrown?

6. Why do you think Molly hasn’t told many people about the lake?

At the library

Dylan climbed the steps to the County Library. Tall doors rose high

above him, and he gripped the metal handle and pulled one side open.

Warm air surrounded him as he stepped inside.

The library was quiet. People worked at small tables around the room.

The librarian typed at a computer on her desk.

Dylan looked at the rows and rows of books. How would he ever find

the books he needed for his school paper?

Mrs. Willis had assigned each student a different subject. Dylan’s

subject was trees.

He needed to research trees, write a report about them, and give his

references at the end of the report.

The librarian could probably help. Dylan stepped to her

desk. “Can I help you?” she asked.

“I need to find books about trees,” he explained.

9
The librarian smiled. She stood. “Follow me and I can show you what to
do.”

The lady led him to a small tablet that hung on the wall nearby.

She showed him how to tap on the search button and type in the

subject of his search.

She typed the word into the tablet. A moment later the

screen showed many books about trees. Next, she pointed to a

set of numbers next to each book on the screen.

“These are called numbers,” she said. “They will help you find

the books on the shelves.”

She showed him how each shelf had a set of numbers on it.

She told him to match the numbers of the book with the numbers on

the shelves.

Soon Dylan had matched the numbers and he saw many books

about trees on the shelves. He chose a few that looked good for his

project. He pulled them from the shelf and found an empty table to

sit.

Dylan looked at all the books. He used a notebook and pencil

to take notes. Soon he had lots of information for his report. He

Disease
Your immune system learns how to stop the
bacteria that can make you sick. When it does this
you get well. Our immune system is able to tell
when something is in your body.

When it senses that something does not belong in your body it tries
to make things to destroy that thing. We can call these things
antibodies. Once your immune system figures out how to make
antibodies that stop a certain disease, it will never forget. The next
time you are exposed to the same disease your body reacts very
fast to stop it.

If a person has an immunity, they can still give the disease to

another person. Coughing, sneezing, and other forms of physical
contact can cause a disease to be transmitted to other people.
A person who gives a disease to other people is called a carrier.
Person to person contact is not the only way that disease can be
transmitted. Some diseases can be transmitted to us from other
animals. Being bitten by an animal can give us disease.
Insects are major disease carriers in the world. Mosquitoes and flies
can carry disease from one animal to another with ease.
