Waste disposal is a huge urban problem in Delhi.

It results in pollution, health crisis’s and rotting

smells to inhabitants of communities even from one kilometer away. It is also becoming difficult
to find grounds to disposal the waste especially when it comes to not harming the environment.
The mountain of garbage in the capital is gaining an enormous size, as solid waste management
becomes an acute problem especially with the handling of plastic waste. 28 square kilometers of
land is needed by 2020 for the capital to be able to dump fifteen thousand tons of solid waste
daily. Delhi is struggling now with three of its four landfills (waste mountains) overdue for use.
There are also no more useable landfills available to take up the daily nine thousand tons of solid
waste.  The people of Delhi are seriously concerned about new landfills developing in their
communities and trying to prevent this badly. This is a worry to the people as similar situations
have occurred before with the authorities not taking care of it smartly. Communities were created
into huge pollution heaps. When rainfall went into the landfills, a black thick liquid called
leachate was created which made the soil noxious.
According to a report of Indian Express Delhi produces 9,000 metric tons of garbage every day.
More than 70,000 sanitation workers of the three corporations manage this. Beyond official
realms, there are 80,000 to 1,00,000 rag pickers. Assuming that a rag picker picks up 50 kg of
waste every day, it reduces the load for treatment and disposal by 1,200 to 1,500 tons per day,
say corporation officials. It is reported by the Indian Express that a 200 acres of is required to
sustain waste processing for the next 50 years.
