Every doctor must work and practice within an ethical framework.

However, despite being

faced with various odd situations and circumstances, the doctors need to ensure that whatever
they do is the best in the interest of their parents (Pinker, 2015). This paper suggests that
doctors need to respect the patient and their dignity as they have the full right to be informed
of the treatment consequences and the treatment decisions.

Charlie Teo is among the best-known surgeons of Australia. Despite being the most skilled
and talented neurosurgeon, Teo is also among the most controversial tumor specialist in
Australia (Miko, 2019). Charlie Teo is mainly known for taking on the cases that seems
inoperable to other neurosurgeons (The Guardian, 2019).

However, the morality of his practices is doubted due to the high expenditure and costs
involved in his surgeries and the extensive use of the crowd-funding and fundraising sites to
pay for the surgeries that have to be performed by Dr. Teo (The Guardian, 2019). Most of the
surgeries done by Dr. Teo did cost around $120,000 for a single patient. However, his
practices cannot be alleged to be overcharging as he only gets a share of around $8000-
$15000 for every single operation (7ampodcast, 2019).

Many medical specialists agree with the fact that Teo does not lack any skill. In fact, he has
good hands and effective technique but there are unjustified risks as well as high costs
associated with his practice. But, at the same time he is accused of giving false hope to
people (Miko, 2019). Hope helps in keeping the morale of the patients high in their tough
times. Teo cannot be accused of giving false hopes. But yes what he is doing is just delaying
the deaths of his patients and giving them some more time to live their dreams. Basically, Teo
prolongs the life of his patients. Also, he remains honest with his patients and does not keep
them in dark. He let every patient know that there is a 100 percent mortality chance involved
in the surgery and also that tumors can back again. In this manner an emotional and personal
bond develops between him and his patient as his parents trust him and his techniques. If
even there is no hope for cure for cancer patients, his patients have hope for the longevity of
their lives.

Thus, according to medical virtue ethics, the moral value of the good doctor matters which
includes his kindness, fairness as well as good judgment. As per the theory of the virtue
ethics, good medical practices by doctor refers to those practices that aims at bringing
positive outcomes for the patients. As per this theory, the practices of Dr. Teo are quite fair as
he extends the lives of his patients who really wish to live longer and are therefore ready to
pay in order to prolong their life and delay their death. Virtue ethics investigates how the
moral character of the doctor helps in bringing good and positive results for his patients.
Therefore, the skills as well as talent of Dr. Teo as well as his honesty makes him a good
surgeon. He does not choose to go for rule-based approaches and therefore focus more on
practice-based approaches and hence operates on the most difficult tumors so as to extend the
lives of his patients.

Moreover, as per the virtue ethics, the doctors moral characteristics motivates them to
improve the wellbeing of their patients and hence they are required to apply their expert
medical knowledge and combine them with the preferences of their patients. Virtue ethics
states that doctors need to work in partnership with their patients and hence inform them,
guide them and help them in making appropriate decisions about their health. Dr. Teo
remains honest with his patients and consider it his duty to inform his patients of the possible
consequences so as to enable them to make a fully informed decision of their treatment. He
does not gives them false hope but rather the hope of living for somewhat longer time and
have time for their loved ones. He therefore operates only on patients who desire to prolong
their life in spite of knowing the consequences or risks involved in the surgery. Therefore, as
per virtue ethics Dr. Teo basically respects the wishes of his patients which is the moral duty
of the doctor.

Therefore, as a true doctor, Dr. Teo performs his duties well and he help his patients make a
decision for themselves by telling them the truth and all the possible outcomes of the
treatment. Hence, as a doctor, Dr. Teo does a tremendous act of his duties and responsibilities
and always consider the best interest of the patient without sticking to their clinical judgments
made by other doctors.
