War & Conquest

The Photographs Version 1 January 2012

War & Conquest is lavishly illustrated with photographs and they are not there just as ‘eye candy’. The
majority are there to illustrate - and by reading the accompanying captions - explain points made in the rules.
Because we are playing a game using miniature model soldiers, we felt it was much better to use photographs
rather than diagrams.

All the miniatures and terrain were kindly loaned from peoples private collections. As the collections were built
from a range of manufacturers, we felt it would be a useful idea to produce an article highlighting where the
models were sourced and from whose collection. There was never going to be enough space to put this in the
book, and so we chose at outset to make it available as an online document.

st
Miniatures and terrain are from the private collections of: Phil Turner, Tony Rodwell, Curteys Miniatures, 1
Corps, Gripping Beast, Andy Hawes, James Morris, Oshiro Model Terrain and Nick Eyre’s North Star. All used
with their kind permission. Our thanks to them for letting us borrow their collections. The photographs in this
book would not have been possible without their generosity and support. Models are identified by owner of
the collection, manufacturers and materials used. Where possible I have taken the opportunity to add a few
personal notes about the photos or models used. The information should be used in conjunction with the
photographs themselves.
At the end of the document you will find the website addresses for the manufacturers. As we mention in the
War & Conquest rulebook, if you notice any omissions or errors, please get in touch. Likewise, as miniature
companies sell off ranges or change their contact details, please let us know. We will then update the
document with any corrections.
Should you have questions, please identify the page number in the book and be as clear as you can be if you
are looking for specific details on a particular model. I may have to correspond with the owner of the
collection, so you may not get an immediate response. I will acknowledge receipt of the communication, so if
you don’t get a reply within a couple of days, you can assume the message never arrived and should try again.

War & Conquest is supported via the Scarab Miniatures forum and the warandconquest yahoo group – join
today!

About the photographs

Pete (the designer) wanted to introduce each section with an inspirational and cinematic photograph, which I
thought was a perfectly good idea. We both wanted the rule shots to be a mix of obvious ‘game in progress’
type photos and other, more exciting photos that could be either a game or a cinematic shot. The miniatures
and terrain we have used in the photographs are generally accurate for the periods they are representing, but
eagle eyed readers may notice one or two historical anomalies. For that, we beg forgiveness, and if you spot
any, please let us know.
The photographs were all taken using a Sony A200 DSLR and processed using Photoshop and accompanying
software by Pete.
This document was created while listening to Iron Maiden, Foo Fighters and Rammstein. Those who have
known me for a long time will know full well how much I like rock music and when in doubt, I recommend
listening to Planet Rock!
Kind regards
Rob Broom

A note from the Author

Miniature: Gripping Beast
Back in the days when I worked at Games Workshop as the Warhammer Historical Manager, I would organise
events at Warhammer World. These were very popular. Various brave souls would organise themed
competitions and campaigns, all played in a great spirit and for fun. Gripping Beast, (Andy Sherwell and Darren
Harding) really got into the ideas behind the event and went so far as to commission a special miniature for the
players in their campaigns. The miniatures were usually based on particular characters from history, but this
one, sculpted by Soapy, was meant to represent me, holding onto to a rulebook. The first one I painted was
given as a retirement gift to Mike Bruck (who has since come out of retirement!), so I got another from GB and
Pete then added the War & Conquest logo digitally. I might try and paint it on properly one day.
Perhaps of more relevance, we will be organising War & Conquest gaming days, and I am sure others will also
take on the mantle in their local areas. If you plan to do so, please let us know and use the Scarab forum to
spread the word!

The terrain was also made by James, the ‘rocks’ on the right came from our garden at the Foxgloves, Bingham,
just before we moved back to the West country.

Inspired by the superb artwork of Neil Roberts that you see on the cover (and in full on page 160), this picture
uses models from our Greek range. The walls and buildings are by Grand Manner and were painted by Chris
Stone.

The trees also came from the collection of Michael and Simon at Curteys (and 1 Corps). Both of them really

quite a few sudden changes from one game to the next!

Most of this unit was painted by Jeremy Jenkins apart from the musician and standard bearer, which are my
efforts after I bought the army from him many years ago. We took one of these figures with us to do the press
pass. On our way we had to take a detour and then drove into a small town where staring us in the face was
Jeremy’s estate agency business. We took that as a good omen!

The Saxon Gedriht unit A uses models that are probably not suitable for the period we are recreating in the

period of history, this probably means the start of a new army.

The riders in this photo were painted by the late Heine Baekkelund for the Warhammer Ancient Battle

kindly let me keep these and a few other pieces after he passed away. I intend to finish off the army properly so
it can take to the field of battle in his memory with this unit as the centrepiece.
