Course Purpose, Goals, and Tasks


The purpose of the master piano major course is to prepare the students to be
internationally competent, enabling them to work as a professional violinist in the
music world and music business upon graduation. The goals are set by an individual
study for each student, which in turn covers all repertoire and performance habits that
are necessary to master all classical music styles, techniques, musical characters,
dynamics, articulations. Furthermore, the course is designed to further the artistry of
each individual student, focusing on bringing the student to international standards
particularly in regard to precision of touch, understanding of tempo, rhythm and
phrasing, mastering the spectrum and shades of dynamic, learning intricacies of sound
color, as well as preparing each student to be competent in his/her own desired
professional direction – such as soloist, chamber music, piano ensemble, collaborator,
pedagogue or freelance musician.

Teaching Content and Basic teaching requirements


The teaching content is individual, but based on the following 5 fundamental
requirements of competence of a classical professional pianist:
1. Instrumental performer craftsmanship studies (exercises, scales and etudes)
2. Interpretation and technical studies (concert etudes and solo pieces)
3. Endurance and ensemble playing in chamber music and piano ensembles
4. Soloist performance (concertos and other major works as soloist with chamber
or symphony orchestra)
5. Study of prominent traditional Chinese piano compositions

3. Grade: The final performance grade breaks down as follows:

- Playing without major flaws in professional competence (without such mistakes as stopping,

thorough rhythmical inaccuracies, wrong notes): 50%

- Correct interpretation (Character, Tempo, Articulation, Style): 10%

- Professional Performance: Stage-presence, memorization, presentation: 20%

- Professional competence and competitive qualities: artistry, musical expression, individuality

and flawless execution of details 20%
