Study Abroad Spotlight: Alana McAndrews

"Hello! My name is Alana McAndrews and I am a senior honors student
majoring in International Business and Finance with a minor in Spanish. During
my spring semester of junior year, I had the opportunity to study abroad in
Madrid, Spain. I attended Colegio Universitario De Estudios Financieros
(CUNEF). This University is a private institution of about 1,000 students that
offers degrees in Business Management or Legal Studies. Classes can be
taken in both Spanish and English. Being at university approximately the size of
my high school was very different. It fostered a sense of community and
allowed me to establish relations with faculty and students. Through these
relationships, I uncovered a passion of mine. I spoke with different faculty in the
Law department, and realized that was a career path I was eager to follow. So,
upon my return home to NY I studied for the LSAT and began the stressful
application process. I have my time at CUNEF to thank for the new path I am
excited to pursue. Although I went abroad to study at a new institution with a
unique international perspective, I learned just as much outside the classroom
as I did in."

India's Democracy in Danger
Our cover leader this week argues that Narendra

Modi, India’s prime minister, and his Bharatiya

Janata Party are creating sectarian divisions that

imperil the world’s biggest democracy. The BJP,

which increased its parliamentary majority last

May despite a slowing ecomony, has pursued a

Hindu-nationalist agenda. A citizenship law,

passed last month, makes it easier for long-term

immigrants to naturalise as Indians—if they are

not Muslims.

Chinese fans in mourning: Kobe

Bryant's death draws an outpouring
of shock and grief

The death of basketball great Kobe Bryant was

felt as far away as China, where fans mourned

his passing along with millions of others across

Asia. The 41-year-old NBA superstar was among

nine people killed Sunday when a helicopter

crashed into a hillside in Calabasas, California.

His daughter Gianna Maria Onore Bryant, 13,

also died in the crash.

The Cost of America's Lurch Toward Managed

Trade

Standing before the global glitterati at the World

Economic Forum in the Swiss mountain resort of

Davos, President Donald Trump bragged of a

“transformative change” to America’s trade policy.

The newly inked “phase one” deal with China, he

said on January 21st, would lower trade barriers

and protect intellectual property. He was not

exaggerating. The agreement on a level of

purchases, rather than on the rules of trade, does

indeed mark a fundamental shift in American

policy. But not one for the better.
