American culture has been enriched by the values and belief systems of virtually every
part of the world. However, not all American values can be accepted in all countries, especially
Indonesia. On the other hand, there are 3 American values accepted by Indonesian people in the
following conditions:

First, Volunteerism. Volunteering is generally considered an altruistic activity and is

intended to promote good or improve human quality of life, which in return produces a feeling of
self-worth and respect, but no financial gain. Volunteering is also famous for skill development,
socialization and fun. It is also intended to make contacts for possible employment or for a
variety of other reasons. Not only in America but Indonesia also has a high volunteerism. Where
great care and humanity is growing in Indonesians. Such as volunteers search and rescue (SAR),
social volunteers and others. Therefore volunteerism can be accepted in Indonesia.

Second, Equality. Equality is quite simply defined as two or more things being of equal
state, appearance, or value. As a concept or theory, this seems rather straightforward and easy to
understand. But, when the idea of equality is applied to people, the concept becomes much
stickier. The United States Declaration of Independence, for example, contains in its preamble
the following statement: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created
equal…' This statement suggests that, in the eyes of those who wrote the document, every citizen
of the newly formed United States was to be treated the same as every other citizen around them.
Likewise, Indonesia is a country rich in culture. Skin differences, language, customs are things
that have grown in this country. However, the Indonesian people uphold unity. This statement
shows that the Indonesian nation never differentiated between humans and racism. All humans
are treated equally.

Third, idealizing what is practical. If many historians believe that most of the beliefs and
values which are characteristically American emerged within the context of the frontier
experience. This is because they have to survive. It led to the overthrow that America is an
idealizing country that is practical. If this value will be accepted in Indonesia. Because the
Indonesian people also prioritize things that are practical and faster to process. Such as in
satisfying of needs. They rely more on online delivery services to fulfill their needs to be more
practical and fast.

They are three of American values accepted in Indonesia. Even though these two
countries have different values or cultures. However, there are still some similarities that can be
accepted by America and Indonesia.

SMALL TALK

If you had a day all to yourself, where would you go and

what would you do?

“If I had a day all to myself, I will go to someplace and stay

overnight in a place far from the crowd. A place that has cool air
and beautiful scenery. It is placed in a hill which is decorated with
plants, trees and beautiful flowers. And I will only enjoy a cup of
cream milk accompanied by favorite books and soothing music.”
