5th Grade

Lesson Plan

Objective: 5th Grade students will be able to identify and play basic written melodic movement
as a step, leap, or repeat.

Goal: That students will be able to understand the melodic movement by seeing and hearing
each example in the lesson

Procedures:
- Students with three different colored (red, blue, and green) index cards on their desks
- A blank staff will be drawn on the board that all students can see.
- A middle C and D will be drawn on the staff
- Explanation of the melodic step and show it on piano how it is one key and note above
the C (play example so students can hear the interval)
- Draw a red arrow between the C and D
- Using a new staff draw a C and then draw an F next to it
- Explanation of melodic leap and show on a piano how the F is many keys and note
above the C (play example so students can hear the interval)
- Draw a blue arrow between the C and F
- Using a new staff draw a C and then draw another C next to it
- Explanation of melodic repeat because even though there are two notes, that it is still the
same note (play example so students can hear the interval)
- Draw a green arrow between the C and C
- Students will be given an opportunity to ask any questions
- The teacher will draw and play either a melodic step, leap, or repeat, and ask students to
hold up the color card that matches the interval being shown based off of the colored
arrows that were previously introduced

Assessment:
Informal group assessment will be done by having students hold up their colored cards for each
question
Informal individual assessment will be done by having individual students volunteer by raising
their hands to answer the question
Informal group and individual assessment will be continued when students apply this melodic
movement activity to large piano body activity and Orff Instruments

Winding:
Winding forwards
- Have students compose basic songs using the melodic movement they have previously
learned
- Use different song examples such as “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” to build on students’
new knowledge of melodic movement
Winding backwards
- Only introduce melodic step to allow students to fully grasp the concept before moving
on to different movements

Adaptations:
Size: Students will be given an opportunity in a following lesson to use large pianos from C4-B4
that they can use to help understand the step, leap, or repeat
Color: By using different colored arrows/cards for the intervals this will help students associate
either red, blue, or green with the different melodic movements.
Modality: Students will be taught the information with a drawn staff and a piano to accommodate
different learners

VA Standards:
