Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), a metabolic related disorder, is the most common cause of chronic liver

disease which if left untreated can progress from simple steatosis to advanced fibrosis and eventually cirrhosis or
Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) which is leading cause of hepatic damage globally. Currently available diagnostic
modalities for NAFLD and HCC are mostly invasive and of limited precision. Liver biopsy is most widely used
diagnostic tool for hepatic disease. But due to its invasive procedure it is not practicable for mass screening.
Objective: Various studies have showed that miRNA could serve as reliable biomarkers for diagnosis of NAFLD and
HCC. The purpose of our review to study the role of miRNAs as the novel non-invasive diagnostic modality for
NAFLD and HCC.
Methods: We comprehensively retrieved relevant data from Embase, PubMed, goggle scholar, Cochrane library by
utilizing keywords “NAFLD” ,“Non- invasive biomarkers” and “HCC”.
Result: Upregulation and downregulation of various miRNAs were observed in both NAFLD and HCC. Aberrant level
of different miRNA in various stages of NAFLD and HCC revealed their efficacy and accuracy as a potential diagnostic
biomarker.
Conclusion: Circulating miRNAs can serve as promising diagnostic and prognostic biomarker for NAFLD and HCC
with high accuracy along with other diagnostic modalities.
