7 Layers of OSI Model
7 Layers of OSI Model
THE SEVEN
LAYERS IN
OSI MODEL
Layer 7 -
Application
Determine how the
user should interact
with data sent or
received.
Layer 6 -
Presentation
Ensure data is usable
and encrypted.
Layer 5 -
Session
Maintain connections
and control ports and
sessions.
Ex: Point-to-Point
Tunneling Protocol (PPTP)
(Method to implement VPNs)
Layer 4 -
Transport
Transmits data using
transmission
protocols.
Layer 3 -
Network
Routing and re-assembly
of data.
Layer 2 -
Data Link
Focuses on physical
addressing of
transmission.
Ex: Receives packet from
Network Layer (Layer 3)
and add in MAC Address.
(Packet from Network Layer contains IP
Address only)
Layer 1 -
Physical
Transmit data in binary
numbering system (1's
and 0's).
