A raindrop, as anything else on the planet, is subject to the earth’s gravity and
initiates its fall at 9.8 meters per second squared, but slows down due to, mainly,
air resistance. Once the drag force proportioned by the air resistance matches
the weight of the raindrop, it reaches the terminal velocity of approximately 9
meters per second, maintaining it until the impact. If we were all raindrops,
mindlessly falling, the very first one would feel the impact the most, but would
build the foundation for a protective layer of water that would diminish the
impact of the following raindrops. Among raindrops, the first one is not prized. It
does not receive praise for being the first, for helping the others; it simply falls
first. If we were all raindrops, that first one would be a hero, but would never
know it; just like the soldier who leads the attack, the one who dies for all the
others.
She stared at him from across the room and her silence screamed.
