UNIT 2: HEALTH

1.2. Đại dịch đang đe dọa thế giới
Look at each of the following passages and interpret into English
- Bộ trưởng Bộ Y tế Nguyễn Thanh Long cho biết, "cuộc chiến" chống COVID-19

Part 2. ENGLISH - VIETNAMESE SPEECH TRANSLATION PRACTICE
2.1. Protecting Your Health During Coronavrius
Look at each of the following passages and practice interpreting Vietnamese
- Older adults and people who have severe underlying chronic medical conditions like
heart or lung disease or diabetes seem to be at higher risk for developing more serious
complications from COVID-19 illness.
- Good hygiene includes washing your hands, covering your coughs and cleaning your
home or workplace.
- If you have cold or flu like symptoms you should seek medical advice and get
tested for COVID-19. You should get tested even if your symptoms are mild.
- As states and territories ease restrictions, it is important everyone continues to stay
1.5 metres away from others wherever possible.
- If someone in your household is sick with cold or flu symptoms, you should:
care for the sick person in a single room, if possible
keep the number of carers to a minimum
keep the door to the sick person’s room closed. If possible, keep a window open
6
wear a surgical mask when you are in the same room as the sick person. The sick
person should also wear a mask when other people are in the same room
protect at-risk family members by keeping them away from the sick person. If
possible, find them somewhere else to live while the family member is sick
seek medical advice and have them tested for COVID-19
- Wearing a mask can help protect you and those around you if you are in an area with
community transmission, and physical distancing is not possible.
- People with the virus circulate in the population and transmit it to others, often
without knowing that they may be symptom-free or only have mild symptoms. That is
why it is important to accept the call to stay home in order to avoid transmission and to
go into quarantine if symptoms appear.
- All active people need a diet that provides enough energy in the form of
carbohydrates and fats as well as essential protein, vitamins and minerals. This means
a diet containing 55-60 percent of calories from carbohydrates (10 to 15 percent from
sugars and the rest from starches), no more than 30 percent of calories from fat and the
remaining (about 10-15 percent) from protein.
- When starches or sugars are eaten, the body changes them all to glucose, the only
form of carbohydrate used directly by muscles for energy. Whether carbohydrates are
in the form of starches (in vegetables and grains), sucrose (table sugar), fructose
(found in fruits and juices) or lactose (milk sugar), carbohydrates are digested and
ultimately changed to glucose.
- Muscles develop from training and exercise. A certain amount of protein is needed to
help build the muscles, but a nutritious, balanced diet that includes two or three
servings from the meat/bean/egg group (6-7 ounces total) and two to three servings of
dairy daily will supply all of the protein that the muscles need. Extra servings of
protein in foods or protein supplements do not assist in muscle development.

Health care systems
- Hospitals, clinic and community health agencies can be very different from other
work environments. Healthcare systems are complex and there are many things you
need to know about types of hospital systems, patient care, insurance, healthcare
providers and legal issues.
- Today Vietnam’s evolving health system is a mixed public-private system. The
public system is organized under an administrative hierarchy, with the Ministry of
Health at the top and provincial and municipal health authorities below.
- Four levels of Vietnam’s health care delivery system provide access to care for all.
There are central-level providers directly managed by the Ministry of Health and
providers at the provincial, district, and commune levels; at the bottom of the
hierarchy is a network of village health workers who make house calls.

- Between 2016 and 2020, pharmaceutical sales are predicted to grow the fastest at a
CAGR of 10.5 percent, compared to medical devices and private healthcare spending,
which will grow at 9.3 percent and 7.2 percent respectively. Pharmaceutical sales are
predicted to grow from US$ 4.7 billion in 2016 to US$ 5.7 billion in 2018 and US$ 7
billion in 2020.
- Changes in living standards and an ageing population have led to the rapid growth in
health expenditure. According to KPMG, expenditure is estimated to increase from
US$ 16.1 billion in 2017 to US$ 17.2 billion in 2018, and close to US$ 20 billion in
2020.
- Since 2012, public healthcare expenditure overtook the private healthcare expenditure,
largely due to the government’s social health insurance programs. From 2016 to 2021,
public healthcare expenditure is predicted to grow at a CAGR of 9.5 percent, while
private healthcare expenditure will grow close to 7.5 percent in the same period.
- In 2016, there were 1,346 hospitals in Vietnam, which included 1,161 public
hospitals and 185 private hospitals. The government health departments in the
provinces and cities manage close to 80 percent of the public hospitals, while the
Ministry of Health and Other ministries/State-owned firms manage the rest.
