Classroom student safety contract

These are the rules that will apply to the science lab. While in the science
lab students must adhere to the rules and use acceptable behavior while in the science lab.

Safety Rules
FOLLOW TEACHER’S RULES.
2. BE CAREFUL OF SHARP TOOLS.

3. WASH YOUR HANDS.

4. USE GOGGLES AND PROPER CLOTHING WHEN NEEDED.

5. TIE BACK LONG HAIR, SECURE LOOSE CLOTHING AND WEAR CLOSED TOE SHOES.

7. REPORT ACCIDENT INJURIES AND SPILLS IMMEDIATELY.

8.NEVER WORK IN SCIENCE LAB IF A TEACHER IS NOT THERE.

9.NEVER EAT DRINK OR CHEW GUM IN SCIENCE LAB.

10. NEVER TASTE OR SMELL THE CHEMICAL IN THE SCIENCE LAB.

What happens when violating rules?

- 1st time- Verbal warning.
- 2nd time review of rules that both parent and student signed.
- 3rd time- removal from class during the duration of class, parents contacted.
- 4th time- discipline referral, parent contacted and administration with see to
further consequences.

We have read, understand and have agreed to the safety rule as written.

Science can be both interesting and safe, just as long as teachers and students are
aware of the hazards and take necessary precaution and safety measures while in the science
lab.
This can be done with an lesson plan that follows the 5 E’s.( engage, explore, explain,
elaborate, and evaluate) this lesson will be a week that will go over science safety in the lab.
-the objectives of this lesson
- to help students to be aware of potential hazards while in the science lab.
- to help teachers to be aware and to evaluate safety of all science experiments
- for students to learn the importance of safety in science.

We will start off with Engage.

- This will start off the week by having a discussion about science safety. Show
the students videos about science safety to start off the discussion. Have them
create interactive notebooks. This also would be the time that we would go over
the science safety contracts and have them and their parents sign them.
\
Explore
- During this time is when we would talk about the classroom, go over some of the
equipment in the science. We would go over the importance of each equipment for
example, we could talk about the beakers and why we don’t smell the chemicals.

Explain and Elaborate

- We will explain why science safety is important. Students will write in their interactive
notebook, the rules of the science lab. We will also go over accommodations and needs
for special needs students such as making sure all labs are wheelchair accessible,
making sure that everyone has a lab partner, have extra time to set up labs, address
those students who have mobility and sensory issues. And have resources for disability
students.
FOLLOW TEACHER’S RULES.
2. BE CAREFUL OF SHARP TOOLS.

3. WASH YOUR HANDS.

4. USE GOGGLES AND PROPER CLOTHING WHEN NEEDED.

5. TIE BACK LONG HAIR, SECURE LOOSE CLOTHING AND WEAR CLOSED TOE SHOES.

6.KEEP LAB AREA CLEAR AND NEAT.

The last would be Evaluated.

- This would happen at the end of the week. Students would review what they have

learned throughout the week about science lab safety. This would been when

students return science safety contracts.

1. Lab Safety I think video.
In this animated video, the characters go over the safety rules for doing science
experiments. I feel that this animated video is the perfect introduction to lab safety for younger
students, those who are doing science experiments for the first time. However, I also noticed
that this video doesn’t have too much in the way of diversity. This video has a lot of appeal for
those younger students and appropriate for those younger videos and it is simple and right to
the point for those just learning about lab safety.

2. Safe science – In the Classroom.

In this video students go over the rules of lab safety. They go over not only what
you should do, but they give examples of what not to do while in the lab. I feel that this could be
used to show students exactly what is to be expected of them while in the lab. This video is
great, as it shows a real science classroom with equipment and real students. There was a
diverse group of students in the video. I felt that this was a great video for older students as it
shows not only the real live classroom, but it shows real students.

3. LAB RULES - Dua Lipa "New Rules" Parody | SCIENCE SONGS

This is a fun song about student safety while in the science lab. It is sung to the song New rules
by Dua Lipa. I feel that this is a great way to inform students of lab safety, it would be great with
older students and younger students as it uses the latest trending songs. In the video you see
the lab as well as several safety signs. However this video has little in the way of diversity.

4. AGHS Lab Safety Rap

Here is another fun video about lab safety. This rap video about lab safety is done by students
and shows the lab classroom. Like the other videos it gives students examples of what to do
while in the classroom and can be a great intrusion video for all ages. However this video was
lacking in diversity.

I watched all four videos and think that all videos in some form can be implemented as
an introduction to safety while in the science lab as they are interesting and infoming, however
what i've noticed about all videos is that none of the video address those with disabilities or
how the science lab can accommodate those who have special needs.
