"RECOMMENDATIONS
F. Corrosion:
Prior to shipment from the manufacturer, all wires
shall be free from visible corrosion. One § m long wire
sample shall be taken from every 10 Mg or portion
thereof produced from each heat of steel. The sam-
ple wires steel surfaces shall be thoroughly exposed
(when coated) and inspected for evidence of corro-
sion. If visible corrosion is found, the wire quantity rep-
resented by that sample shall be rejected,
3.2.2 Strand
Strand used in stay cables shall conform to ASTM
AAIGIAZIOM "Standard Specification for Steel Strand,
Uncoated Seven-Wire for Prestressed Concrete," and shall
be weldiess, low-relaxation grade.

COMMENTARY
C3.2.2 Strand
‘The frequency of occurrence of welds in wire rod should
be limited to one weld per each 500 kg of rod.
Low-telaxation grade is recommended because the low-
relaxation strand: (1) has proven to have a sound tensile
strength throughout the entire length as it has been subject-
‘ed to a near breaking load in the low-relaxation treatment;
(Q)has better straightness (cast) for easy cable fabrication.
Hot dip galvanized strand has been used on several major
cable-stayed bridges outside the US. Galvanized steand is
made from either as-galvanized wires (in Japan) or
