Subject: Finite Element Method (PE-III)

ASSIGNMENT-1
Date: 12.04.2022
Date of submission: 20th April 2022

1. Explain concept of Finite Element Method. State applications of FEM in various fields of
engineering.
2. Strain compatibility conditions for 2D stress–strain field. Derive the compatibility conditions for
a 2D displacement field. (Ref. piezoelectric-vibration control book page no. 74)
3. Discuss in details various steps involved in FEM.
4. Explain the following.
a. Principle of Minimum Potential Energy
b. Galerkin’s Method
c. Rayleigh Ritz Method
5. Find the set of equilibrium equations using potential energy approach for the system of springs
as shown in the Fig. below.

Π = Total Potential Energy

K1, K2, K3, and K4 are spring stiffnesses
δ1, δ2, δ3, and δ4 are spring extensions.
q1, q2 and q3 are displacements of nodes at 1, 2 and 3 respectively.
