‘The drug infission problem and its effecton biological systems have been studied extensively in the control literature.
‘The phenomenon of postoperative hypertension is normal among cardiac patients, Especially patients after coronary
artery bypass grafling procedures. The elevated blood pressure must be reduced as soon as possible in order to
avoid, for instant, deterioration of suture lines that will lead to increase bleeding. or even losingaa life. Continuous
infusion of vasodilator drug. such as sodium nitroprusside (SNP), would reduce the elevated blood pressure,
almost immediate, Intensive care by clinical personnel is necessary, Most of the time, the injection of SNP is done
manually by clinical personnel, for instant, nurses, which is always poor in. quality. The control problem isto find the
correct dose which quickly lowers the blood pressure to the desired level, while avoiding adrug overdose. A
model forthe patient's response to the administration of the drug has been developed by Slate and Sheppard
(1982) and Slate et al (1980) and has been used by several researchers for controller design. Hahn etal. (2002)
‘applied the internal model control (IMC) concept to the blood pressure regulation problem.Avn adaptive mechanism,
‘was introduced to deal with the different sensitivities of the patient. This controller was simvulated on three classes,
of patients, namely, the nominal, sensitive, and insensitive patients. The results showed that the controller provided
adequate regulation for nominal and sensitive patients, but failed to satisfy Slate's criterion of settling time for
insensitive patients The present study is focused to develop a simple controller design while still being able to
achieve the desired performance and mbustness for any possible model. The parameter variations and their effect
oncontroller performance are analyzed in detail, ‘The simulation study shows that the proposed method has significant
advantage over other conventional approach fora variety of paticat models,
