VIMS 3G Software Update Checklist:

This checklist is intended to provide an alternative to track the VIMS updating process. For detailed instructions
please refer to the documents listed in the Publications section of this document.

1. Before flashing, obtain (if applicable):

a. ET and Communication Adapter 3.
b. VIMSpc, VIMSpc master database (mining.cat.com/vims).
c. Correct Telemetry database (if third party monitoring system installed).
d. MineStar configuration files if applicable (GPS and geotransform files).
e. VIMS Compatibility matrix spreadsheet (mining.cat.com/vims).
2. Download VIMS settings/information to help you reconfigure VIMS. Connect to VIMS Main when prompted.
a. Using ET download ET>Information>Product Status Report (F6).
b. Change VIMS Main IP to default. ET>Service>VIMS Main>Configuration>Internet protocol (F5)
*Default VIMS Main IP shown below (in Default IP Configuration section). For MG or A5 ECMs refer
to step t5 (in the troubleshooting section of this document).
c. Record VIMS settings using VIMSpc, under Communicator pages (Auto File Download, Automatic
Schedule Settings and Settings). Under XIM record the MineStar Configuration.
3. Flashing. Using ET>Winflash proceed to flash new software.
a. Flash both VIMS Main and VIMS App ECMs following matrix (step 1e).
b. Cycle power (off 60 seconds).
4. After flashing. Connect to ET
a. Verify the machine serial number / Product ID (ET>Service>Configuration>VIMS Main>General
Information). Must be uppercase.
b. Cycle power (off 60 seconds).
5. Install VIMS configuration(s) using VIMSpc.
a. Connect to VIMSpc>Configure>Install/Copy Configuration>Install Configuration on Machine. Install
configuration(s).
b. Cycle power (off 60 sec).
6. Configuring VIMS using ET and VIMSpc. Connect to ET and VIMSpc.
a. Verify the VIMS Main installation status (ET>Service>Configuration> VIMS>Software Enable
Attachment>Data Acquisition System Installation Status: Installed.
b. Verify the VIMS Application - Payload status (ET>Service>Configuration> VIMS Application>Payload
Control System: Installed).
c. Enter VIMS settings via VIMSpc using information from step 2b (Communicator and XIM tabs).
d. Via VIMSpc upload GPS configuration and geotransform files (MineStar site).
e. Re-enter the ET settings using information of PSR from step 2a
7. Verify and configure. Connect to VIMS Main via ET>File>Select ECM>VIMS Main.
a. Synchronize the hour-meter. ET>Service>Synchronize service hour meter.
b. Set ECM date/time and time zone. ET>Service>ECM Date/Time. *If equipped with GPS, only time
zone will be necessary to adjust.
8. If flashing from Old File Format to New File Format perform route delete process.
a. Download route delete.jar program from mining.cat.com/vims. With the VIMS Main default IP
address run the application.
b. Change the VIMS Main IP address to the appropriate address (if applicable).
Troubleshooting:
t1. Product ID must be uppercase (verify that the master ECM contains it in capital, *master ECM is usually the
advisor or monitor ECM). Change it to uppercase (key cycle, off during 60 sec).
t2. ET Configuration & Summary. If the Product ID or other parameters remain Unavailable after power cycling,
disconnect and reconnect ET to allow it to connect to both CDL and J1939 datalinks after ECM initialization.
t3. Never change the default IP address on the VIMS Application (default IP address is shown below).
ET>Service>VIMS Application>Configuration>Internet protocol
t4. VIMS configuration file names structure needs to be maintained. Do not change the file name after
downloading from SIS. NOTE: File extension must be lower case *.cfg
t5. For Motor graders or machines with the new VIMS (A5 ECMs). The default IP address is hardcoded to the
ECM, if under ET>Configuration>VIMS Main>IP address, the default IP is re-entered, it will cause conflicts.
Leave this field with 0.0.0.0 or enter the specific IP address for the radio only.
t6. When installing the configuration via cab service port, if VIMSpc does not display the option to load the
configuration on the App ECM, then follow step 2b or connect via bumper port.
t7. If during VIMS Configuration installation (step 5) the incorrect file was uploaded, it is possible that the ECM
can or will stop responding due to continued attempts to parse the incorrect configuration. To stop this, it is
necessary to ground pin 56 of the affected ECM, then perform a key cycle and re-install the correct
configuration (after installing the correct configuration disconnect the ground from pin 56 and cycle power).

Default IP Configuration (VIMS 3G New File Format):

*Use these settings if manually entering the

IP address on your computer network card
(TCP/IPv4) configuration.
