SKMM 3813

(INTRODUCTION TO INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING)

OPEN ENDED GROUP PROJECT GUIDELINES

Course learning outcomes of the group project:

At the end of group project work, students must be able to:

i. Propose engineering solutions based on Industrial Engineering principles and theories. (PO1-C6)
ii. Evaluate and solve productivity and quality problems using suitable Industrial Engineering Techniques.
(PO1-C6)
iii. Analyze cost saving from project management and/or industrial engineering improvement activities. (PO12-
C4) **
iv. Evaluate project alternatives using principles and concepts in engineering economy. (PO12-C6) **
v. Demonstrate as a member or leader in a group for solving multi-disciplinary Industrial Engineering problems.
(PO10-A3) **
(**to be evaluated)

Guidelines for conducting group project:

 Team members must not be more than 4 students. Approval from the lecturer must be obtained for special
cases to have more than 4 students.
 Problems to be studied must be related to industrial engineering. The project scopes are limited to topics
covered in SKMM 3813 course. The project must cover at least three(3) related topics covered in the course.
The complexity of problems must be agreeable by the lecturer through a proper meeting and discussion.
 The group is required to present or explain about the project during the semester. All members are required to
participate during the presentation or explanation.
 Duration of project: 7- 12 weeks
 Assessment of group project:
o 3% for PO12, students need to write one page of self-reflection on entrepreneurial aspects
o 7% for PO1 on the technical skill
o 5% for PO10, students need to write one page of self-reflection on team working.

Selection of Case Study:

You are required to select a real life case study. These problems could be related to poor productivity, high labor
turnover, congested work space and work flow, frequent accidents, long processing time, no standard method for
performing tasks, ergonomic issues and etc. Use the knowledge learnt in the class to classify these problems and decide
which IE tools are suitable to solve the issues/problem. Show in your report all the IE techniques used and the
improvements made/proposed (existing problem and the proposed solution). You study should include cost saving and
engineering economy analysis as a result of the proposed improvement. Clearly state how the data was collected and
analyzed. Any assumptions made must be clearly explained. Detailed project implementation (project activities should
be scheduled into a Gantt chart, specify flow of activities undertaken, specify task assignment among group members,
actual contribution of each group member. Evidence of discussion need to be recorded into minute of meetings) and
need to be included in the report.
Guideline for Final Report:

a) The report should be between 20 to 25 pages (including appendix and attachments).

b) Use font size 12 Times New Roman with 1.5 spacing.
c) The margins are as follows – top and bottom margin 1.00”, left margin 1.25” and right margin 1.00”.
d) Use double spacing between paragraphs.
e) Use ring/comb binding for the report with transparency cover on both front as well as back pages.
f) Last date to submit the written report is on Thursday 21-12-2017, latest by 12.00noon.
g) The report must be written in English
h) The report must have front page (title, team members, name, subject, semester), member photos, table of
content, introduction, body text, conclusions and references.
i) All pages must be numbered on top right hand side.
j) Reference to other works must be properly cited. DO NOT plagiarize from other works, inclusive from the
internet and previous studies.
k) Those who are suspected submitting plagiarizing materials from any source without quoting the references
will be awarded ZERO for the group project mark.
l) All figures and tables must be numbered according to appearance, have titles and descriptions and referred to
in the text.
m) All graded reports will not be returned and make an extra copy for yourself.

Example for Format of Final Report

1.0 Introduction (about 2-3 pages)

1.1 Background of the Project (introduce case study and current scenario, justification for selection)
1.2 Problem Statement (example: poor working environment, long lead time, high reject rate, high machine
downtime, high accident, etc)
1.3 Objectives

2.0 Project Methodology (2- 3 pages)

2.1 Briefly explain the method/techniques used to identify the problem (site visit, observation, interview,
historical data etc). Include project activities (Gantt chart)
2.2 Briefly explain the method/techniques used to collect and analyze data, Equipment and tools used.
2.3 Briefly specify I.E techniques used in the project (at least from three related topics)

3.0 Existing System (about 7-14 pages)

3.1 Describe existing scenario (current practice)
3.2 Can use process flowchart, diagrams, charts, layout, table etc. Identify and describe the problem with
supporting evidence such as photos, figures, tables
of data etc.
3.3 Data collection – summarizes data collected in table, graph, chart etc.
3.4 Data analysis and interpretation - use proper chart/diagram or suitable IE tools to analyze the data.
Justify the selection of IE tools

4.0 Proposed Improvement (about 5 – 10 pages)

4.1 Suggestion for alternative improvements – new procedures, design, method, schedule etc.
4.2 Analyze between the existing situation and the proposed improvements, such as in terms of the
expected labour and time saving, or the expected quality improvement or productivity improvement.
Must include cost saving and engineering economy analysis as a result of the proposed
improvement.

5.0 Discussion (3 – 4 pages)

Discuss the results, comparison and justification for selection of the best alternatives among the proposed
solution. Whenever possible relate to the industrial
engineering theory or concepts.

6.0 Conclusions (1 – 2 pages)

Conclude the main findings and related to the stated objective (in section 1), and include suggestion for
further work.

7.0 References - list of references cited in the written report.

8.0 Appendices:
8.1 Individual Reflections – every member need to write a one page self- reflection on entrepreneurial
aspects related to project. Another one page self-reflection to describe your TEAM WORK
experience (as a member or leader) in solving multi-disciplinary Industrial Engineering problems.
8.2 Project Gantt Chart and Task Assignment
8.3 Appendix – drawing, photograph, sketches, product brochures and any other related/relevant
information.
