Standard Operating Procedure

Welding machine-MIG
PEDESTAL GRINDER

DO NOT use this machine unless you are authorized to use safely.

POTENTIAL HAZARDS
1. Electric shock
2. Fumes
3. Radiation burns to eyes or body
4. Body burns due to hot or molten materials
5. Flying sparks

PRE-OPERATIONAL SAFETY CHECKS


1. Locate and ensure you are familiar with all machine operations and controls.
2. Check workspaces and walkways to ensure no slip/trip hazards are present.
3. Ensure the work area is clean and clear of grease, oil and any flammable materials.
4. Keep the welding equipment, work area and your gloves dry to avoid electric shocks.
5. Ensure your gloves, welding gun and work leads are in good condition.
6. Ensure other people are protected from flashes by closing the curtain to the welding
bay or erecting screens.
7. Start the fume extraction unit before beginning to weld.
8. Ensure work leads do not create a tripping hazard.

OPERATIONAL SAFETY CHECKS:


1. Ensure machine is correctly set up for current, voltage, wire feed and gas flow.
2. Ensure work return earth cables make firm contact to provide a good electrical
connection.
3. Take care to avoid flashes
Take care to avoid flashes:
1. Switch off the machine and fume extraction unit when work completed.
2. Close the gas cylinder valve
3. Hang up welding gun and welding cables
4. Leave the work area in a safe, clean and tidy state.

DON’T:
1. Leave the work area in a safe, clean and tidy state.
2. Never leave the welder running unattended.
