4) Verrier Elwin speaks about the different types of wood
carvings in various regions of North East India. Such as the
splendid wood decorations done on the houses by Thangkhuls, Maos and Marams ; the carving on the morungs by Konyaks ; the making of magnificent village gates by Angamis ; while tribes like the Phoms and others too excel in fashioning pipes and making beautiful decorations on wooden mugs, toys etc. This craft of wood carving has extraordinary vigour and beauty, and we should try to preserve it from extinction. The wood carving is an unique art form found in the hill villages and so the art should not be lost in oblivion. Wood carving might become a thing of the past , if not taught and encouraged at the educational centres. For this reason Verrier Elwin urges that our educational centres should encourage wood carving, so that the craft would not only be widely practised but would also remain alive for the generations to come.
