longer than the motorcycle has been a half sensible form of transportation. In

The period between the wars saw production slip back in

developed. Everything possible was done to persuade the

at anything like the capacity that it had been, it was still
doing far better than any other manufacturer. In the mid-
1920s Harley-Davidson overtook Indian as the biggest
motorcycle manufacturer in the United States, and for a
time it was the biggest in the world.
In motorcycle racing, the board tracks that had provided
the main spectacle in the early years of the century—and
that had given Harley a number of notable victories—were
falling from favor, partly as a result of some appalling
accidents. By the mid-1920s, dirt-track racing had become
the next big thing and was growing in popularity.

H arley introduced the V-series in 1930, 14 years after rivals

H arley’s long history of flat-track racing success has never
been a rich seam of inspiration for production models. The
XLCR (see pp.126–27) and XR1000 (see pp.130–31) were both

from one frame, two engines, a couple
of different fuel tanks, and a variety of

ne million customers can’t be wrong. That is how many Evolution
O engines were built in its 15 years of production from 1984 to 1999.
The engine followed the traditional Harley format of a 45° air-cooled

Spirit of adventure
With every established brand competing for a slice of the big-capacity adventure
bike market, it’s important to have a product and a style that stand out. Harley
designers managed to create a unique look for the Pan America, with a distinctive
snub-nosed style incorporating oblong headlights. Prelaunch imagery of the new
Pan America showed the bike being ripped along dirt trails and leaping through
rugged scenery, although the bike’s weight and dynamics make this a pretty
unlikely scenario for all but expert riders. It was the suggestion of this potential,
a machine that could go off the beaten track, could explore and take its rider
on a journey, that was the heart of the appeal of bikes in this category.
