CHEM 200 Organic Chemistry Laboratory

Orientation

Dr. Hande Gündüz

February 2022
General Rules:
• The laboratory grade will constitute 20% of your overall CHEM 200 grade.

• A student failing to pass lab will automatically fail from the course (i.e. will get an
F grade).

• The passing grade for the lab section of CHEM 200 is 60.

• All sections will be done face to face.

• Attandance will be taken.

• In the sections we will have:
i) Quiz
ii) Theoretical part and Discussion
iii) Experiment

• A quiz will be done for each experiment. (Depending on the experiment and attendance and
performance of students, quizzes may be done before or after the theoretical parts)
Lab Grading Policies

Grading percentages:
• Quiz 20% (including safety quiz, total 9 quizzes)
• Experiment Results and Reports 35% (based on 8 reports)
• Performance 10%
• Final 35%

• A student absent from more than one lab session without an excuse will
automatically receive an F grade for the course.

Reports should be written individually!

‘Academic dishonesty in the form of cheating, plagiarism and collusion are serious
offenses and will not be tolerated’
Safety
• Pay attention to all written and verbal instructions

• CELL PHONES, TABLETS, COMPUTERS, etc… ARE NOT ALLOWED

DURING LAB. SECTİONS!!!

• ASK QUESTIONS if you are not sure of what you are supposed to be doing.

• Safety Glasses MUST be worn at all times during lab experiments, especially
those involving chemicals, glassware, and heat.

• Chemicals can get trapped under the contact lenses and cause more
damage than normal!
Lab Clothing

• Lab coats must be worn at all times.

• Gloves must be worn when you are doing experiments/working with chemicals.

• Open-toed shoes, sandals are not allowed.

• Long hair must be tied and loose clothing must be confined.

Danger!

Keep hands away

from your CELL PHONES, eyes and mouth while using
chemicals

NEVER EAT OR DRINK IN

THE LAB!!
When Accidents Happen:
1. REMAIN CALM!
This sounds like common sense, but when accidents happen remaining calm is
crucial!

2. Report ALL accidents to your Instructor/TA IMMEDIATELY, no

matter how small.
Chemical Spills
• You should treat ALL chemical spills or wet counter tops as
DANGEROUS.

• Wash your hands with plenty of water immediately if you spill or splash
chemicals, then inform your instructor.

• ALWAYS treat corrosive acids and bases with care, they are the most
potentially dangerous chemicals used in our lab even when have been
diluted
FIRE
• Bunsen burners
• Be aware when they’re in use, the flame can be very hard to see.
• Pay close attention and be extremely careful.

• Hot Plates
• Never keep volatiles (solvents) near active hot plates.
• Solvents can ignite

• Paper
• This type of fire is caused by carelessness and can easily be prevented.
• You should only have the lab procedure and data collection sheet at your
bench top.
• If a paper fire occurs, push the paper into the sink and turn on the water.
FIRE TYPES

• Class A : Solid (Paper and trash) fires. Water extinguishers

• Class B: Solvent fires. Dry powder or CO2 extinguishers

• Class C: Gas and electricity fires. Dry powder or CO2 extinguishers

• Class D: Reactive metals and organometal compound fires.

Sand should be used
MSDS
Material Safety and Data Sheet
contains important chemical information such
as toxicity, health effects, reactivity, storage,
fire and explosion data etc.
Material Safety and Data Sheet
Before coming to the lab
• Read theoretical and experimental part of the experiment manual to be ready for
the lab quiz.

• Pre-labs will be signed at the beginning of the lab session (Notebooks should be
submitted upon entrance to the laboratory)
❖ Chemicals, which will be taken for the experiment/reaction, their physical
properties (mp, bp and flash point), molecular weights, densities (if liquid),
amounts of them, and moles (for reaction experiments) should be written
on notebooks as a table and set-up of the experiment should be hand-drawn
prior to the relevant lab. section.

• Late comers are not allowed to take the quiz and may not be accepted for the lab
session
Lab Station Maintenance and Clean-Up

1. Keep your station clean and organized during the lab.

2. You should label and know what is in every container!

3. Know how and where to dispose chemicals and other lab materials, as directed
by your instructor.

4. Wash first with water and then with acetone and put all glassware to the oven
properly after you are done with the experiment.
BEFORE YOU LEAVE the lab, you must ensure that:

1. all glassware is washed and equipment is put away.

2. you leave bench top and fume hoods clean and tidy.
3. you get your notebook checked and signed by your Assistants

Lab Reports
• You are expected to write your lab reports individually. Results could be
discussed among student without stealing any part of the report.

• Should be submitted on Turnitin until 14 days after the experiment (till midnight).

• Penalty for late delivery of written reports is 10% per day late!
In reports;
• All structures and set-ups should be drawn by hand. You can take photos of hand-drawn
figures and paste it on your report before submitting to the Turnitin.

• Failure to include required items is the most common reason of receiving low grades on
lab reports.
WHAT SHOULD YOU HAVE ON YOUR REPORTS?

• In materials and methods part, it has to comprise material table with amounts and mole
calculations, set-up/s and procedure.

Chemical
Mass or
Name and MW d b.p m.p Mole
Volume
Structure

• Results part: Give the all observation you can get from the experiment and give related data
(temperature, amounts of purified/isolated chemicals, yield calculation, etc.)
• Discussion part: Make comment on the ALL observations and on your yield. Give possible
reasons and suggest suitable methods to improve the results by referring possible sources.
• If available, answer the questions which are at the end of the manual.
• References should be included.
Scientific Report Writing
• Cheating, plagiarism, copying data or reports are serious offences and are not tolerated at Koç
University. The penalty for plagiarism is severe and will be in effect for this course. If you use
an idea, a fact or piece of data from a reference source you must acknowledge the source in
the REFERENCE section.
❖You need an average of 60 on your lab reports to be able to take the lab final. If your lab

report average is below 60, you can not take the lab final and will automatically fail the lab.

❖Late submissions are not allowed. You should submit your reports to Turnitin until 14 days

after from the lab sessions at 23:59.

Structure of Reports

•Reports will have 5 main parts;

1. Cover page
2. Experimental Part (Materials & Method)
3. Results
4. Discussion
5. References
