Timing chain: removal/installation


Removal
Remove the fuel filler cap
Remove the seat cushion

Remove the fuel pump cover

Remove the seat cushion

Disconnect the fuel pump connector

Remove the fuel pump cover

Start the engine


The engine should stop
Keep restarting the engine
Until it will no longer run
Turn the ignition off
Delete all the fault codes

Remove the engine upper cover
Remove thethe
Disconnect fuelbattery

earth cable
Remove thethe
Disconnect seathydraulic
cushion line quick-release coupling

Remove the air filter housing


Drain the cooling system
Remove the windscreen washer fluid tank
Remove the coolant expansion tank and place it aside
Remove
Remove the
the fuel
powerpump coverfluid reservoir but do not disconnect
steering
Disconnect the fuel line from the injector rail
Disconnect the positive crankcase breather
Disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation hose
Disconnect the ignition coil wiring (4x )
Timing chain: removal/installation
Removal
Remove the fuel filler cap
Remove the seat cushion

Remove the cylinder head cover


Raise the vehicle
Remove the right splash guard
Turn the crankshaft to TDC for cylinder 1
Align the timing marks on the crankshaft pulley and timing cover

Remove the fuel pump cover

Remove the ancillary drive belt


Remove the air-conditioning compressor

Removal
Remove the fuel filler cap
Remove the seat cushion

Remove the ancillary drive belt lower idler pulley


Remove the crankshaft pulley
Remove the crankshaft oil seal and discard

Remove the fuel pump cover

Remove the coolant pump pulley


Remove the lower engine support bracket bolt
Timing chain: removal/installation
Removal
Remove the fuel filler cap
Remove the seat cushion

Remove the timing cover lower bolts

Remove the fuel pump cover

Lower the vehicle


Remove the bracket from the power steering line
Timing chain: removal/installation
Removal
Remove the fuel filler cap
Remove the seat cushion

Remove the power steering pump but do not disconnect the lines
Use a trolley jack to support the engine
Note: Put a wooden block between the sump and the jack
Remove the right-hand engine support
Remove the right-hand engine support bracket

Remove the fuel pump cover

Remove the ancillary drive belt upper idler pulley


Remove the right-hand engine support bracket
Timing chain: removal/installation
Removal
Remove the fuel filler cap
Remove the seat cushion

Remove the ancillary drive belt tensioner


Remove the timing cover bolts
Remove the timing chain cover
Use a pry bar at the points shown

Remove the fuel pump cover


Timing chain: removal/installation

Remove the fuel filler cap
Remove the seat cushion

Check the camshaft timing marks

Remove the fuel pump cover


Check the crankshaft timing marks

Remove the chain tensioner
Remove the fuel

Remove the chain

Remove the timing chain
Raise the vehicle
Drain the engine oil
Remove the ancillary drive belt cover
Remove the oil sump
Remove the oil pump chain tensioner
Remove the oil pump chain
Remove the crankshaft gearwheel

Installation
Refit the crankshaft gearwheel
Refit the oil pump chain
Align the timing marks

Remove the fuel pump cover

Compress the timing chain tensioner rod


Lock the tensioner; use a locking pin (8514)

Remove the fuel filler cap
Remove the seat cushion

Refit the oil pump chain tensioner


Remove the tensioner locking pin (8514)
Position the crankshaft as shown

Remove the fuel pump cover

Align the camshaft timing marks

Refit the chain guide rail (12 Nm)


Timing chain: removal/installation
Removal
Refit the oil sump (M6: 12 Nm, M8: 22 Nm)
Remove
Note: Apply
the fuel

Remove
Fit the timing

Align the dark blue plates on the timing chain with the marks on the camshaft gearwheels

Align the dark blue plates on the timing chain with the marks on the crankshaft gearwheel

Remove the fuel pump cover

Tension the chain


Refit the chain tensioner rail (12 Nm)
Push the plunger in until the locking pin fits (8514)

Removal
Remove the fuel filler cap
Remove the seat cushion

Refit the chain tensioner (12 Nm )

Remove the fuel pump cover

Remove the tensioner locking pin (8514)


Rotate the crankshaft 2 turns
The crankshaft should be at TDC for cylinder 1
Check the timing marks again

Removal
Remove the fuel filler cap
Remove the seat cushion

Remove the fuel pump cover

Refit the timing chain cover


Upper bolts: (M6: 9 Nm, M8: 26 Nm)
Clean off the sealing surfaces
Note: Apply sealant before fitting

Remove the fuel filler cap
Remove the seat cushion

Fit the ancillary drive belt tensioner (24 Nm)


Refit the right-hand engine support bracket

Remove the fuel pump cover

Refit the ancillary drive belt upper idler pulley


Refit the right-hand engine support (75 Nm)
Refit the right-hand engine support bracket (A: 88 Nm, B: 68 Nm )
Timing chain: removal/installation
Removal
Remove the fuel filler cap
Remove the seat cushion

Remove the trolley jack


Refit the bracket

Remove the fuel pump cover

Refit the power steering pump (26 Nm)


Raise the vehicle
Refit the timing cover lower bolts (9 Nm)
Timing chain: removal/installation
Removal
Remove the fuel filler cap
Remove the seat cushion

Refit the coolant pump pulley (9 Nm)


Refit the crankshaft pulley (210 Nm)
Lubricate the bolts lightly using engine oil
Refit the ancillary drive belt lower idler pulley
Refit the air-conditioning compressor (25 Nm )

Remove the fuel pump cover

Fit the ancillary drive belt


Refit the front right splash guard
Lower the vehicle
Refit the cylinder head cover
Timing chain: removal/installation
Removal
Renew the gasket
Remove
Note: Apply
the fuel

Remove
Stage 1:

(5 Nm)

Stage 2: (10 Nm)
Reconnect the ignition coil wiring (4x)
Reconnect the positive crankcase ventilation hose
Refit the positive crankcase breather
Reconnect the fuel lines

Refit the power steering fluid reservoir


Remove
Refit the the fuel pump
windscreen cover fluid tank

Refit the coolant expansion tank
Refill the cooling system
Refill the engine oil
Refit the air filter housing
Reconnect the battery earth cable
Reconnect the fuel pump connector
Refit the fuel pump cover
Refit the seat cushion
Refit the fuel filler cap
Refit the engine upper cover
