Dean of Students Roles and Responsibilities

Handbook

Discipline and Student Support


Responsibilities:
1. Handle minor day-to-day offensenes
2. Educators Handbook access and input in a timely manner
3. Ownership of the DPLC Behavior matrix and revisiting it every year to determine its
effectiveness.
4. Building and facilitating relationships with all students
5. Consistent follow up discipline- same day/24 window
6. Rounds throughout the building, checking in on classes.
7. Holding students accountable to get to class on time
8. Lunch Duty
9. Tardy Lockouts
10. Phone calls home if discipline is assigned within a 24 hour period.
11. Monthly disciplinary data report to administration

Dean of Students is responsible for the creation and facilitation of Educators Handbook
Training. This training should be facilitated during the week of return for instructors.

Training must include:


1. The purpose of Educators handbook- Data points and record keeping for behavioral
incidents.
2. How to log in and out of educators handbook
a. Assigning teachers usernames and passwords
3. Modeling how to allocate a behavioral category
a. This should be done using the DPLC Behavior Matrix
b. Overview of the DPLC Matrix
c. Minor offenses vs. Major offenses and their purpose within the system
4. Ensuring the teachers understand the difference between “E” and ‘M/HS” categories
5. How to and why we write professionally within the systems.
6. Scenario based training (Example training)

PBIS
1. The Dean of Students at DPLC is responsible for creating and facilitating a
comprehensive Positive Behavior Interventions and Support system for our school.
a. Annual training on PBIS and how it functions at our School
i. Training must include:
1. Overview and purpose of PBIS system within a school
2. The difference between school-wide PBIS vs Classroom PBIS: IE
class dojo vs phoenix bucks.
3. Deep dive into the PBIS matrix and how it intersects with day to
day relations with students
4. Schoolwide strategies and supports for our students
a. IE: Phoenix bucks
b. Create and facilitate a PBIS team that implements school wide strategies for
PBIS
i. Team must include multiple stakeholders(Teachers, Students, School
Improvement Team Members)
ii. The team must meet monthly to discuss implementation and progression
of PBIS initiatives at the school level
c. Dean of Students will organize PBIS events with the PBIS team for students once
per quarter
i. This can include but not limited to: meals, field trips, dance parties
ii. Must get approval from administration

MTSS
1. The Dean of Students at DPLC is responsible for creating and facilitating a
comprehensive Multi-Tiered Systems of Support program at our school.
a. Annual training on MTSS and how it functions at our School.
i. Training must include:
1. What is MTSS- Explain the three tiers
2. Why is MTSS different at DPLC
3. How does our specific programing(Modern Classroom
Framework) fit within MTSS
4. Explain your vision/process of teacher reporting data regarding
students within MTSS- IE Google form, spreadsheet, ETC
a. Include a timeline for teachers
5. Explain how MTSS meetings work and their purpose
6. How you plan to report to teachers after decisions are made
regarding supports and interventions students.
7. How you plan to support teachers around data collection and
progress monitoring.
8. What is done with the collected data
b. Bi-Weekly MTSS team meetings
i. Dean of Students is responsible for creating an MTSS team with multiple
stakeholders- Teachers, Administrators, Student support services
ii. Dean of Students will be responsible for facilitating MTSS meetings where
discussion of student progress and goals will be carried out.
iii. Allocate specific roles for the team: IE Testing data, Absences, Current
Grades
iv. Send out MTSS student rosters one week prior to meeting so data can be
collected by the team.
c. Monthly Meeting Reports at Staff Meeting
i. “News from MTSS” - what is happening on the team, how students are
talked about and the ways in which we are supporting them.
d. Progress Monitoring Check ins
i. The Dean of Students will create a progress monitoring schedule where
he meets with teachers to discuss student progress of goals.
ii. He will collect that data and store it in a place accessible to the MTSS so
we can discuss student progress at MTSS meetings.
e. FAM-S
i. The Dean of Students is responsible for inputting school information into
the FAM-S system in a timely manner.
1. Ensuring usernames and passwords are up-to-date
2. Must include artifacts and supporting documentation for each
section of the FAM-S
3. Must be able to facilitate the FAM-S practice meeting in January
as well as the closeout meeting in June.

New Student Orientation:


1. The Dean of Students is responsible for scheduling and the facilitation of Summer
Student Orientation
a. Responsible for calling and scheduling participants
b. Physical room set up- Must consider social distancing
c. Creating a system for carrying out out orientation
d. Ensuring there is an interpreter available for Spanish speaking families
e. If you are not able to attend a scheduled orientation, you must call the families
and reschedule for a different time. Other members of the student support team
are not responsible for covering for you.
f. Facilitation of Student Orientation
i. Explaining rules and expectations for students and families
ii. Explaining DPLC instructional programing and why its unique to Durham
Public Schools--independence, self advocacy, MC.
iii. Facilitating Reading Plus Diagnostic and IReady Math Diagnostic as an
entry data point for MTSS
1. You must be present for its facilitation- Data needs to be authentic
