Project summary
The environment of one’s place can be contaminated by unwanted wastes sourced from the
household, public organizations and the private sector. These wastes are wastes, which are either
liquid or solid generated in residential areas, Commercial settings and institutions. Among these
the one and the foremost form of waste is solid waste. Solid wastes are all the wastes arising
from human and animal activities that are normally solid and are discarded as useless or
unwanted. These solid wastes generally include: Residential, Agricultural, Commercial,
Industrial wastes, Institutional solid waste, Hospital solid wastes.

Diseases related to environmental sanitation exacerbate poverty by decreasing productivity and

household income. Also, the high cost of living, low levels of education and large curative health
costs affect the local and national economy. Also, a dirty environment in most major cities can
deter tourists or investors and affect the tourism of the city. Consequently, action is needed to
thoroughly resolve environmental sanitation problems to prevent adverse impacts on health,
economy and development.

The General Objective of this project will be to Improve hygiene and sanitation condition and
Prevention and control of communicable disease in Awetu Mendera Kebele, Jimma Town,
2021.whereas , the Strategies to the project implementation are Participating the community in
implementation of the project, Working with Jimma town and Awetu kebele administration,
Encouraging the community to develop sense of ownership., Involving different stakeholders

1 Introduction
1.1 Background

The environment of one’s place can be contaminated by unwanted wastes sourced from the
household, public organizations and the private sector. These wastes are wastes, which are either
liquid or solid generated in residential areas, Commercial settings and institutions. Among these
the one and the foremost form of waste is solid waste. Solid wastes are all the wastes arising
from human and animal activities that are normally solid and are discarded as useless or
unwanted. These solid wastes generally include: Residential, Agricultural, Commercial,
Industrial wastes, Institutional solid waste, Hospital solid wastes (1).

The collection of municipal solid waste is a public service that has important impacts on public
health and the appearance of towns and cities. Unfortunately, many urban administrations seem
to be losing the battle of coping with the ever-increasing quantities of waste. The challenge is
made greater by the diversity of materials in the waste, which is no longer mainly food waste and
ash, but includes more and more plastic packaging, paper and discarded electronic equipment.
Third world countries are characterized by their high rate of rural to urban migration. This
uncontrolled migration has a great adverse effect on the level of solid waste and its management
(2).

Sewerage systems in urban area is an important priority in Indian setting because of rapid
urbanization, industrialization, and population growth, along with increase in slum population
and migration. A recent study shows that urban sanitation can have an impact on diarrheal
disease, even without measures to promote hygienic behaviour. In this regard, the presence of
efficient drainage and sewerage system is a major factor in the prevention of spread of
waterborne diseases in major cities. As per the census 2011, at country level, there is no drainage
facility in 48.9% households, while 33% households have only open drainage system. In this
review article we have tried to highlight the drainage and sewerage in India, the problems we
face and their possible solutions. (3)

1
1.2 Statement of problem

Diseases related to environmental sanitation exacerbate poverty by decreasing productivity and

household income. Also, the high cost of living, low levels of education and large curative health
costs affect the local and national economy. Also, a dirty environment in most major cities can
deter tourists or investors and affect the tourism of the city. Consequently, action is needed to
thoroughly resolve environmental sanitation problems to prevent adverse impacts on health,
economy and development (4).

The 2016 EDHS indicated that, Overall, only 6% of Ethiopian households use improved toilet
facilities, 16% in urban areas and 4% in rural areas. Only 35% of toilet facilities are shared in
urban households, whereas only 2% of rural households share toilet facilities with other
households. One in three households in Ethiopia have no toilet facility, 39% in rural areas and
7% in urban areas (5).

In Ethiopia, like many Sub-Saharan Africa countries, poor sanitation is a major cause of fecal
oral diseases, including diarrhea. In particular, children under the age of five years are the most
affected as they are prone to water-borne diseases. In addition, unsafe disposal of children’s
feces may be an important contaminant in household environments, posing a high risk of
exposure to infants and young children (6). According to the Ministry health, nearly 40 percent
of Ethiopians lack access to sanitation facilities. Even where toilets do exist, many are not used,
meaning that open defecation is common (7).

To keep the health of the society and achieving maximum health level of the community is the
ultimate goal of any initiative related to health. Among those initiatives that are related to health
solid waste management is the basic one, in order to minimize and eliminate those infections
associated with solid wastes. Communicable diseases related to poor sanitation practice are the
most common public health problems across the world particularly in developing countries that
are responsible for considerable morbidity and mortality (8).

According to latest WHO report, of the 4.5 billion people who do not have safely managed
sanitation, 2.3 billion still do not have basic sanitation services. This includes 600 million people
who share a toilet or latrine with other households, and 892 million people – mostly in rural areas

2
– who defecate in the open. Due to population growth, open defecation is increasing in sub-
Saharan Africa and Oceania. There are big gaps in service between urban and rural areas. Two
out of three people with safely managed drinking water and three out of five people with safely
managed sanitation services live in urban areas (9).

The COVID-19 pandemic has in a matter of weeks fundamentally crippled health systems in
many countries and is now threatening to cause a global economic depression. This in turn is
having an unprecedented impact on health care organizations’ ability to provide emergency care
and on societies to provide core functions of the state. The COVID 19 pandemic is causing huge
stress on the health care system of all countries in the world. The impact of the pandemic is both
social and economic. Ethiopia, being one of the developing countries, is currently at the verge of
the epidemic (10).

Findings of preliminary assessment in Awetu Kebele that was conducted using observation focus
group discussion, key informant interview, medical record review and household survey indicate
that the major health problem of the community is related to environmental hygiene and
sanitation. Specifically, the problems are:lack of latrine facility to people those live around
Medhaniyalm church, poor solid and liquid waste management practice, poor prevention
measure of COVID 19 at school community of Awetu Kebele.

Therefore, the purpose of the current intervention is to construct communal latrine, improve
hygiene and sanitation condition and improve awareness on COVID 19 prevention measure at
school community Prevention and control of non-communicable diseases in Awetu Mendera
Kebele, Jimma.

7 Methods

This project will be implemented in Awetu Mendera Keble from 16/2-15/3/2021. AMK is one
of the 17 kebele of Jimma town. The kebele got its name from the Awetu River crossing the
kebele from North-west to south–east direction. It has a total population of 15111, with male of
7707 and female 7404 with 3148 households. The kebele has an area of 116.18 hectares.

The project team or DTTP group members discussed the project topic based on situational
analysis by using qualitative study (document review, environmental observation, FGD and key
informant interview) and quantitative / households’ assessment survey in Awetu Mend era
Kebele made to understand most prominent problem in the Kebele.

Based on the finding of rapid qualitative &quantitative survey assessment, the team made
detailed discussion on problem identification for prioritization of the problem then finally
prioritization of the problems were made by prioritization criteria. Accordingly the problem of
latrine facility especially households those live around Medehanyalm church , the problem of
sewerage system and poor COVID 19pervention measures ( utilization of face mask ,
sanitizers, hand washing, and physical distance ) at school community were findings from the
quantitative assessment and put as major problem area by the stakeholders. Community members
were primarily selected for intervention because of their poor environmental sanitation and
hygiene. Necessary information will be disseminate for the target population about the
significance of the planned project and all of the community members’ are provide with health
education about the importance of selected intervention. Communicating with kebele
administration and stakeholder for resources mobilization& fund raising and in general,
monitoring and evaluation will be conducted project implementation through project life time.
