FREEDOM OF MARRIAGE

Marriage has been a cornerstone of societal structures around the world for many
centuries. While marriage is an age-old practice, the institution has evolved as the needs of
society have shifted. Views regarding the acceptability of couples of different religions, race, and
now gender have changed. Despite this evolution, the concept of marriage has consistently been
valued by society and the legal system. People marry for a variety of reasons: religious,
institutional, social, individualist, and sexual. There cannot be one exclusive definition of
marriage because every marriage differs based on the needs of each couple.

Same sex marriage is a controversy that is part of the family rules issue and is related to
homosexuality and marriage disputes. Same sex marriage is very devise topic which generate
a lot of debate globally.

The discussions on LGBT- centered topics have long been around and is still somehow
lacking in terms of resolutions. Being gay is inborn behavior which means that it is not a choice.
Either you are or you are not gay. The protests of the LGBTQIA+ community regarding marriage
mostly revolves around its legalities and the equity that revolves around it. Because no matter
how many times we deny it, the cisgender heterosexual people or the straight people have the
privilege of being able to marry the ones they love and be safe in doing so.

Personally, I believe that gay people should have the same right to be married couple as
anybody else as there is no reasonable reason for banning same sex marriage. Denying people
of the same sex the option to marry is discrimination and creates second classes of citizens. On
July 25, 2014 Miami-Dade County Circuit court judge Sarah Zabel ruled Florida’s gay married
ban unconstitutional and stated that the ban serves only to hurt, discriminate, to deprive same
sex couples and their families of equal dignity to label and treat them as second-class citizens
and to deem then unworthy of participation in one of the fundamental institutions of and society.
Same sex couples should have access to the same benefits enjoyed by heterosexual
married couples.

At the end of the day, all of it boils down to one thing; a choice. This is because some
LGBTQIA+ couples do not intend to marry because to them, it means adopting into the
heteronormative ideologies and concepts.

The choice to marry and the choice not to marry. Despite the choices and our stances,
we must always keep in mind that it’s okay to have opinions, but if it is putting minorities and
other people at risk, or it’s an opinion that is based on the marginalization and other people’s
oppression, then we need to rethink our opinions. Because a safe and inclusive society for some
is not enough, it must always be for all.

OBESITY: A SOCIAL PROBLEM, NOT AN INDIVIDUAL ONE

The King's Fund recently released a report on obesity in the UK, stating that obesity is
quickly becoming "a disease of England's poorest people." They show that obesity-related
hospital admissions are 2.4 times higher in the most deprived areas of England than in the least
deprived areas. This reflects a wide range of societal inequalities, including disparities in health,
housing, and employment. However, the government frames the issue as something that
individuals are responsible for, rather than a social problem caused by poverty and disparities.

Obesity is risk-factor for the most common nowadays diseases, as cardiovascular

diseases, diabetes, hypertension, some carcinomas, degenerative diseases of weight bearing
joints (spine, hips, knees), and present a huge medical and social problem, as well. It causes
not only somatic but mental problems as well, especially in females and younger persons. Some
of them undergo risky weight reducing methods, surgical procedures, etc, to reduce their body
weight and to release mentally stressing body deformities.

While there are some very serious problems that obesity introduces to our society, we
must always keep in mind that there are a lot of factors that contribute to its prevalence and
propagation. The ethnicity, race and sociocultural backgrounds contributes to its prevalence in
the world.

I believe that the first little steps we can take to efficiently and effectively tackle obesity is
to not treat obese people as aliens in society and discriminate them for a condition that they are
also battling with.

THE HUMAN BRAIN ON PORN

For decades, the subject of pornography has been hotly debated and extensively
researched. The fact that the American Psychiatric Association does not currently recognize
pornography addiction or sex addiction in the most recent version of the Diagnostic Statistical
Manual of Mental Disorders, or the DSM-5, complicates this issue. Sex is a fairly taboo topic
when it comes to governmental regulations and clinical classifications. Partly because there’s
major concern that creating such a diagnosis could be used by certain religious or other groups
to suppress sexual expression the group finds reprehensible. It could also give people excuses
not to deal with their own deviant behavior.

Merriam-Webster defines pornography as “the depiction of erotic behavior (as in pictures

or writing) intended to cause sexual excitement.” In other words, these demonstrations are
meant to cause you to become sexually aroused, rather than evoke a certain emotional
response.

There is no doubt about it: pornography changes brain chemistry. Pornography has been
studied in both animals and humans to determine how it affects the brain. However, no extremely
large, long-term studies have been conducted to observe these effects.

I believe that truly, the pornography industry has a negative effect on people and society
as whole. Not only does it have a tendency to become a causative factor for certain mood
disorders, it also does not help in fostering relationships with other people, sexism and misogyny
is prevalent in the porn industry. Some women have reported that videos of them having sex
were spread around porn websites without their consent. The problem with the internet is that,
once it is there, it is never truly gone.
To better tackle porn addiction and the negative effects of porn to society, we must
efficiently implement policies like better Sex and Health Education and discuss sex without
malice and with the intent to educate. We may also include more resource people that will better
guide other people that are struggling with this.

Lastly, as a society that constantly progresses, destigmatizing and de-tabooing sex would
make other people more comfortable in discussing it and issues revolving it. This would then
allow people to see that the sex that is shown on porn is harmful to them and to society.
