CLASSWORK NO. 1C

Tension Members

Description:

The tension member strength is dependent on the cross-sectional

area of the member. This workout includes the determination of the
design tensile strength of members in tension and their tensile
capacity in all limit states: tension on gross section yielding (GSY),
tension on effective net section fracture (NSF) and block shear
rupture (BSR).

Time Frame:
One (1) Laboratory meeting

Individual Submittals:
Hand computations right after the laboratory schedule.

a. Calculate the distance “b” so that the net area in path 1-2-3-4 is equal
to the net area of path 1-2-4?
b. Using the computed value of “b”, solve for the critical net area.
c. Calculate the ultimate safe tensile force Pu that the steel plate could
carry?

subjected to dead load and live load only. The pitch distance, s=60mm
(c.t.c. horizontal bolt spacing), gage distance, g=75mm (c.t.c. vertical
bolt spacing) and edge distance, e for the channel and gusset plate are
65mm and 70mm respectively. Considering the
following limit states, calculate the total service “A” Channel Section
