INSTRUCTIONS: Research on the guidelines for one to be an eligible blood donor in the
Philippines. Also look for conditions that will make a volunteer ineligible to donate
blood. Place your answers below.

For some people donating blood is a simple procedure however, it requires each
possible donor to undergo a screening process to ensure that they are qualified to
donate. National requirements for blood are determined by the capacity and coverage
of the country's population. In developed countries, the demand for blood continues as
the medical care industry continues to expand and improve. Donor eligibility rules help
to protect the health and safety of the donor as well as the person who will receive a
blood transfusion.

Based on what I’ve read from the Red Cross Organization Philippines, in order
to be an eligible blood donor, Firstly, a person must be in good general health. Any
healthy adult, both male and female, can donate blood. Men can donate safely once in
every three months while women can donate every four months and weigh at least 50
kilograms. Secondly, in in terms of age, a person must be at least 17 years old to donate
to the general blood supply, or 16 years old with parental/guardian consent, if allowed
by state law. There is no upper age limit for blood donation as long as you are well with
no restrictions or limitations to your activities.be at least 16 years old. Parental consent
is required for blood donation by 16 year olds; 16 year olds are NOT eligible to donate
platelets. No parental consent is required for those who are at least 17 years old. If you
are 76 or older, you will need your doctor’s written approval for blood or platelet
donation. Meaning to say, Donor should be in the age group of 18 to 65 years.

In Addition, with regards to Temperature and Pulse of the donor shall be normal
and in Blood Pressure, the systolic and diastolic blood pressures are within normal
limits. As to, Haemoglobin it should not be less than 12.5 grams. When it comes to other
guidelines that should be eligible to donate blood, for instance, Child Birth should have
delivered 1 year ago and stopped lactation. Scars/Skin Puncture arms & forearms
should be free from skin punctures or scars which are indicative of Intravenous drug
use or frequent blood donations. Immunization & Vaccination should not have had

shots for any of the following - Cholera, Typhoid, Diphtheria, Tetanus, Plague,
Gammaglobulin in last 15 days; Rabies vaccination in last 1 year. Cancer should NOT
have any forms of cancer. Surgery should not have had Tattoo in last 6 months.
Infection should NOT have Hepatitis B, C, Tuberculosis, Leprosy, HIV. Other Diseases

should not have Epilepsy, Asthma on Steroids, Bleeding disorders, Thalassemia, Sickle
Cell Anemia, Polycythemia Vera. Heart Disease should NOT have any Heart diseases.
Dentist yes if whitening or impression. YES the day after a filling (restoration), cleaning
or orthodontics. YES 3 days after an extraction, surgery, root canal, crown, root
planning, gum autograft or implant. High Risk Individuals should not have had any
history of Genital ulcers/Discharge, History of multiple sexual partners and Drug
Addiction. Diabetes, yes if resolved or controlled by diet or oral drug and no if treated
with insulin injections. Drugs you cannot give blood if injected intravenously, even
once.

Therefore, if you have a chronic medical condition such as diabetes or high blood
pressure, you may still be eligible as long as you are receiving treatment to control your
condition.

On the other hand, According to the site I’ve read entitled "General Blood &
Platelet Donor Guidelines” a person will not be eligible or ineligible to donate blood or
platelets if they aren’t healthy or not feeling well that’s why a person is ineligible to
donate if they have a cold, flu, sore throat, cold sore, stomach bug or any other
infection. When a person has a certain medications or used drugs it may pose a risk to
the donor or recipient, and if you're taking them you will not be able to give blood.
Also, if they have recently had a tattoo or body piercing they cannot donate for 6
months from the date of the procedure. If the body piercing was performed by a
registered health professional and any inflammation has settled completely, they can
donate blood after 12 hours. Additionally, have tested positive for hepatitis B or
hepatitis C, lived with or had sexual contact in the past 12 months with anyone who has
hepatitis B or symptomatic hepatitis C. Further, if they had a tattoo in the past 3 months
or received a blood transfusion (except with your own blood) in the past 3 months.
Have ever had a positive test for the AIDS virus and a man who has had sex with
another man in the past 3 months. As well as, those who have used injectable drugs,
including anabolic steroids, unless prescribed by a physician in the past 3 months.
Along with have engaged in prostitution in the past 3 months. Moreover, have traveled
in the past 3 months, or lived in the past three years, in an area where malaria is
endemic. Furthermore, a persons who are pregnant are not eligible to donate. Wait 6

weeks after giving birth. In that case, Blood donors must wait at least 56 days between
blood donations.

So, if any of you have any of this, you are ineligible to donate blood however,

there is always other way to help so, what can you do if you aren't eligible to donate? It
says that while a given individual may be unable to donate, “he or she may be able to
recruit a suitable donor. The Blood Center is always in need of volunteers to assist at
blood draws or to organize mobile blood drives. In addition, volunteer works are
always welcome help the blood center ensure the continuous supply of safe blood to
those in need”.

In Conclusion, we encouraged healthy individuals to regularly donate blood for

the sake of those who need a consistent supply and also for the good effects this has to
their own health. Suddenly, I just remembered the first day I donated my blood that
happened at the BPSU gym and to tell you honestly, I had mixed emotions. At first I
was nervous but at the moment I was lying on the bed and I saw my blood going into
the blood bag I am actually surprised and at the same time very happy. I felt proud to
myself and say’s in my mind that somehow in my life by volunteering to donate blood I
make an impact on someone’s life when they need it the most.
