Tutorial #04

1. A flat plate (180 × 8) is connected to a gusset plate using M16 bolts as shown in Figure 1.
Assume the joint is designed for rupture under tension load. Provide the sketch of all the possible
failure modes and calculate corresponding rupture strengths. Find the critical section. Assume
the gusset plate is non yielding. Take the clearances for the bolts equal to 2 mm. Consider
fy = 250 MPa and fu = 410 MPa.

2. Choose an angle section to carry a factored tension of 200 kN. Assume the section is connected
to a gusset plate using 4 M20 bolts placed in a row at a distance of 50 mm. The gusset plate does
not yield. Preform all the necessary checks. Take fy = 250 MPa and fu = 410 MPa.
