Exam 2: 9:40-10:25 Feb. 10, 2022. Submission permitted till 10:30pm.

Make assumptions if required and state them.

1. Consider the simple Brayton cycle with no losses that has two isobars and two
isentropes. Assuming constant properties, show that two isobars on the Ts diagram
will necessarily diverge i.e. with increase in entropy the difference between the
temperatures will increase. Note that one way to do this is to use Tds=dh-vdp
relationship. (5)

2. An air standard Brayton cycle operates with two turbines: a high pressure turbine
and a low pressure turbine. High pressure fluid exiting the combustion chamber
enters the high pressure turbine at 1500+3*XYZ Kelvin(XYZ is the number formed by
the last three digits of your roll no. e.g. if your roll no is 120100005 then XYZ is 005 etc.)
and lower pressure fluid at exit of the high pressure turbine is permitted to enter
the low pressure turbine. The entire power from the low pressure turbine is used to
run an alternating current generator of 10MW capacity. The work output from the
high pressure turbine drives the compressor. The compressor inlet is 330K and
100kPa and it raises the air pressure to 1200kPa. The flow through all components
can be considered to be that of constant property ideal gas with the exception that
the constant property approximation does not hold for flow through both the
turbines. Use Cp=1005J/kgK, ϒ=1.4. There are no losses in the system.
Draw the physical diagram of the setup and the corresponding TS diagram
assuming that it is an air standard closed cycle with states numbered properly. (5)
Determine the cycle efficiency and the volume flow rate at inlet to compressor. (10)
