10iii - Students will use media and techniques, with an emphasis on mixing media and
perfecting techniques in drawing, painting, print making, sculpture, fabric arts, photography
and technographic arts.

Specific Learning
Outcome(s) 7-A: A. The centre of interest can be made prominent by contrasting its size, shape, colour or
texture from the other parts of the composition.

8-C: Transitions of colour, texture or tone relate the parts of a composition to a unified whole

8-E: Interesting negative space complements and binds the positive areas into an harmonious
whole

10iii-D:Continue to make two- and three dimensional assemblages from found materials,
reaching for more sophistication leading to specifics, such as puppets, mobiles, mosaics,
papier-mâché

Learning Students will:

Objective(s) - Create a paper or digital 2-D mosaic of a cross that contrasts with the warm or cool

colours associated with winter such as blue.
- Warm tones are the opposite, think warm = fire.
- Contrast
- Contrast is when one subject in the artwork is very different
from the rest. Contrast = difference.
- In our example of art, can you identify what pieces are
contrasted?
- The black cross is contrasted from the light and
bright surrounding pieces.
- This draws our eye to the center of the artwork →
to the cross.

Instructions: (~10 min)

The students will have two options on how to complete today's art. I will
present each option and provide a brief overview of each one.

I will then ask who would like to do the online art. Those people can grab
their chromebooks quietly and begin watching the instructional video (with
headphones) while I teach the remaining students how to do the physical
version.

Digital :
- Materials: Chromebook & Headphones
- Students will open GC Art and click the link to watch the ED puzzle
video.
- The video will outline how to download Google Draw, Add an image
and make mosaic shapes using the draw tool.
- The students should choose to either use warm tones or cool tones
for their surrounding colours.

Physical:
- Materials:
- Cream construction paper (background)
- Black construction paper (cross)
- Coloured construction paper (surrounding pieces)
- Scissors
- Glue Stick
- Step 1: Name on back of cream paper
- Step 2: Trace out a cross on black construction paper and cut it out.
- Step 3: Snip off a piece and glue it down where you would like to
start the cross. Continue cutting and gluing into the shape of the
cross being sure to leave room for the negative space. Trim away
extra as needed and add pieces as needed. Try to keep the outer
edges straight to define the shape well.
- (I will use a powerpoint with shapes to demonstrate this on
the board to conserve resources)
- Step 4: Choose warm tones or cool tones.
- Step 5: Cut and glue your mosaic pieces to fill the entire
background with your tiles.
- I found that it was easiest to cut a bunch of pieces first and
then glue them all down, fitting them in like a puzzle and
trimming as necessary. One by one is too time consuming.
- Add your colours around the cross as you desire!
- Step 6: Trim any overhanging pieces and fill in any gaps.
- Step 7: Hand in and offer to help others cut pieces for their mosaic

Work time (~40 min)

- After giving the instructions the students will have time to work.
- The students may visit as they work as long as they remain on task
and seated at their desks.
- I will play some music in the background as they work.
- Materials will be available for them on the side counter.
- Warm and cool colours will be separated on the shelf.

Clean Up (15 minutes):

Since it is the end of the day, we will have a 10 minute classroom clean up
starting around 3:15.
- Clap signal followed by ‘hands on top’ to get the students’ attention
and stop busy hands.
- I will give a run down of my expectations and clean up of materials
- I will put a timer on the board and the students can start cleaning
- Near the end I will have a mystery piece of garbage (the person
who picks it up will earn a starbuck).
- When the students are finished tidying and have completed their
classroom jobs they will stand behind their desks for further
instruction.
- Depending how much time is left, we will either play the game 11 or
I will dismiss the students (what they ate for breakfast style).
