Dear Editor,

I am writing to spread important information about stroke awareness. A stroke is listed as

one of the top five causes of death in adults and many symptoms go unrecognized. The effects of

a stroke can be debilitating and irreversible if action is not taken quickly. The acronym, B.E.

F.A.S.T, can be used by anyone when trying to decide if someone may be experiencing a stroke.

It is important to look for balance issues (B), blurred vision (E), one sided facial drooping (F),

one sided arm weakness or numbness (A), and slurred speech or difficulty speaking (S). If

someone has any of these symptoms, it’s time (T) to call 911. If someone is having trouble

remembering what each letter stands for, have the victim stick out their tongue to see if it droops

to one side. Strokes are time sensitive so getting proper medical treatment is critical to prevent as

much damage as possible.
