E-Safety
• E-safety refers to the safety of data and
personal information while using the
internet.

• E-safety is required to make sure a user’s
personal information is not made
vulnerable and even leaked to hacker’s
for e.g., which can lead to identity fraud,
bank A/C issues, etc.
Dangers of online Communication
Using the internet to communicate
• The internet provides us with lots of different ways in which we can
communicates with each other. Some of these are include:
1. Instant messaging – e.g. Whatsapp, Viber, kik, etc..
2. Social networking – e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc..
3. Blogging
4. Emailing
5. VoIP services e.g Skype, Zoom, Google Meet, etc..
6. Chatting in online games
• When used responsibly all these tools can make it extremely easy for
us to keep in contact with friends and family.
What are the dangers of communicating over
the internet?
• You have to be careful how, and with who you communicate with
online.
• The internet is full of potential dangers including:
• Cyber predators – e.g. ________?
• Cyber bullies – e.g. ___________?
• Data theft – e.g. _____________?
• Adult content – e.g. __________?

• Cyber predators – e.g. Pedophiles
• Cyber bullies – e.g. Nasty messages being sent over whatsapp/or facebook
• Data theft – e.g. Online con artists stealing bank details
• Adult content – e.g. Pornography, uncensored videos etc.
What is Internet Anonymity?
• When people communicate over the internet, they do so whilst
being largely anonymous (unidentified).
• This makes it difficult to trace them if they choose to misuse
communication tools such as social media and instant messaging.
• This makes it more likely for people to do things they wouldn’t
normally do because they don’t have the fear of getting caught.
• Example:
• “Internet Trolls” are people who use the internet to post
comments that are deliberately hurtful, inflammatory or racist.
They are cannot likely make such comments in public because
they would face consequences.
Personal Data
• Personal data is anything that can be used to identify a
person.
• Examples of personal data:
Full Name
Home Address
Banking details (A/C no, pin, etc.)
Medical history (suffered from depression, etc.)
Phone number
etc
Why personal data should be kept confidential?
• As the use of computers continues to expand, the health risks
and security risks continue to increase.
• Many of these risks are associated with the internet which
poses a great risk to younger people unless they are vigilant at
all times. But large businesses are also at risk from hackers,
pharming attacks and viruses, for example.
• Many of the precautions people and business can take are
common sense but, it also requires additional knowledge to
know how to protect yourself from these external attacks.
• Personal data like ethnic origin, political views, criminal
activity, mental health history, Sexual orientation and
religion can be used to blackmail victims of data
breaches
• If personal data is leaked (data breach), the
following can occur:
Identity theft
Bank fraud
Damages to personal property
Kidnapping (if kidnappers get
access to the victim’s address.
