What is Internet Anonymity?
• When people communicate over the internet, they do so whilst
being largely anonymous (unidentified).
• This makes it difficult to trace them if they choose to misuse
communication tools such as social media and instant messaging.
• This makes it more likely for people to do things they wouldn’t
normally do because they don’t have the fear of getting caught.
• Example:
• “Internet Trolls” are people who use the internet to post
comments that are deliberately hurtful, inflammatory or racist.
They are cannot likely make such comments in public because
they would face consequences.

• Personal data is anything that can be used to identify a
person.
• Examples of personal data:
 Full Name
 Home Address
 Banking details (A/C no, pin, etc.)
 Medical history (suffered from depression, etc.)
Phone number
etc
Why personal data should be kept confidential?
• As the use of computers continues to expand, the health risks
and security risks continue to increase.
• Many of these risks are associated with the internet which
poses a great risk to younger people unless they are vigilant at
all times. But large businesses are also at risk from hackers,
pharming attacks and viruses, for example.
• Many of the precautions people and business can take are
common sense but, it also requires additional knowledge to
know how to protect yourself from these external attacks.
• Personal data like ethnic origin, political views, criminal
activity, mental health history, Sexual orientation and
religion can be used to blackmail victims of data
breaches
• If personal data is leaked (data breach), the
following can occur:
Identity theft
Bank fraud
Damages to personal property
Kidnapping (if kidnappers get
access to the victim’s address.
Etc.

• To prevent the above, it is essential that personal

data is protected.
• Personal data can be leaked intentionally and
unintentionally.

spyware, phishing, pharming, Smishing, vishing,
ransomware , spam, moderated and un-moderated

• Identity theft is where someone gets hold of your personal
information and then pretends to be you. Why should we prevent ID
theft?
• Prevent theft of your money:
• If online criminals obtain your bank details, they can use that
information to withdraw the money or make online purchases at your
expense.
• Prevent burglary of your home:
• People have been burgled as a result of sharing dates and times when
they are on holiday away from their homes… this clearly says please
rob me..!
• Prevent physical harm to yourself
• Unfortunately the internet is used also by people who can only be
described as “Online Predators”.
• These can include also pedophiles who deliberately look for and
target children.
• Posting personal information online such as your age or an image
