Barry is a 27-year old who is a foodservice manager at a casual dining restaurant. Barry is responsible for i M MBA-242 3 supervising and managing all employees in the back of the house. Employees working in the back of the house range in age from 16 years old to 55 years old.” In addition, the employees come from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds. For many, English is not their primary language. Barry is ServSafe® certified and tries his best to keep up with food safety issues in the kitchen.but he admits it’s not easy. Employees reccive “on the job training” about food safety basics (for example, appropriate hygiene and hand washing, time/ temperature, and cleaning and sanitizing). But with high turnover of employees, training is often rushed and some new employees are put right into the job without training if it is a busy day. Eventually, most employees get some kind of food safety training. The owners of the restaurant are supportive of Barry in his food safety efforts because they know if a food safety outbreak were ever linked to their restaurant; it would likely put them out of business. Still, the owners note there are additional costs for training and making sure food is handled safely. One day Barry comes to work and is rather upset even before he steps into the restaurant. Things haven’t been going well at home. When he walks into the kitchen he notices several trays of uncooked meat sitting out in the kitchen area. It appears these have P.T.O. mM MBA-242 4 been sitting at room temperature for quite some time. Barry is frustrated and doesn’t know what to do. He feels like he is beating his head against a brick wall when it comes to getting employees to practice food safety. He has huge signs posted all over the kitchen with these words: KEEP HOT FOOD, HOT AND COLD FOOD COLD and WASH YOUR HANDS ALWAYS AND OFTEN. All employees are given a thermometer when they start so that they can temp food. Hand sinks, soap, and paper towels are available for employees so that they are encouraged to wash their hands frequently. The meeting was attended by the heads of various departments in the company and was convened to discuss the targets for the coming assessment year. Deshmukh had a formidable sales target to achieve and wondered how she would be able to meet those seemingly impossible goals. This fear was further aggravated by the fact that the productivity levels of employees in the company-had been falling. Deshmukh was under tremendous pressure from the management to improve the performance of her team. She also had to deal with the decreasing levels of employees’ morale in her 24-member team. Deshmukh knew in her heart that she had to communicate with her team. One thing that she was confident about was her Interpersonal communication skill. As a first step, Deshmukh informed her team members about a meeting that she planned to hold the next day. She then drafted a plan of action that she intended to discuss with her team. The next day, Deshmukh began thé meeting by informing her team members about the corporate meeting she had attended. P.T.O. (8) MBA-243 4 She then said, “We have a difficult task ahead for this year, and your participation and involvement is essential to achieve the goals”. She then invited suggestions from her team members regarding the role to be played by each of them. The meeting then progressed on to setting of individual targets for by each team member as, it was felt that this would help in accomplishing the organizational goals. Specific goals were, therefore, set and agreed upon by all the team members. The team aimed to increase the organizational profits by 18% over the next six months. They sketched out a plan of action to achieve the targets set for the team and decided that they would meet once every two months to monitor their progress. Clear communication was established. For continuous feedback and reporting Deshmukh was always available on mail. She used to promptly reply to queries and doubts and used to give feedback. Two months later, the team met again and received their progress. Deshmukh also gave a feedback on the performance of every member of the team. The team then collectively identified the areas of improvement and decided upon the measures they ‘would take to overcome their deficiencies. This (8) MBA-243 5 continued for the rest of the year. The final review meeting was held just before the yearly corporate meeting attended by the top management. The team was surprised to see that they had achieved their targets. Thus, effective planning, control and communication mechanisms helped the team achieve their short term goals, and this in turn, helped in the achievement of the organizational objectives. Besides, the employees were also motivated as the management gave adequate recognition to their involvement and participation in achieving team goals. The target to be achieved by the team was highly challenging. This further motivated the team members as they had better opportunities to prove their problems solving skills. Thus, the outstanding performance of the sales team helped the organization achieve in the jong term. SECTION - C {20 Marks) (Compulsory) In 1995, Unocal, an oil and gas enterprise based in California, took a 29 percent stake in a partnership with the French oil company Total and state-owned companies from both Myanmar and Thailand to build a gas pipeline from Myanmar to Thailand. At the time, the $1 billion project was expected to bring Myanmar about $200 million in annual export earnings, a quarter of the country’s total. The gas used domestically would increase Myanmar’s generating capacity by 30 percent. This investment was made when a number of other American companies were exiting Myanmar. Myanmar’s government, a military dictatorship had a reputation for brutally suppressing internal dissent. Citing the political climate, the apparel companies Levi Strauss and Eddie Bauer had both withdrawn from the country. But as far as Unocal’s management was concerned, the giant infrastructure project would generate healthy returns for the company and, by boosting economic growth, a better life for Myanmar’s 43 million people. Moreover, while Levi Strauss and Eddie Bauer could easily shift production of clothes to another low-cost location, Unocal argued it had to go where the oil and gas were located. P.T.O. @) MBA-203 4 However, Unocal’s investment quickly became highly controversial. Under the terms of the contract, the government of Myanmar was contractually obliged to clear a corridor for the pipeline through Myanmar’s tropical forests and to protect the pipeline from attacks by the government’s enemies. According to human tights groups, the Myanmar army forcibly moved villages and ordered hundreds of local peasants to work on the pipeline in conditions that were no better than slave labor. Those who refused to comply, suffered retaliation. News reports cite the case of one woman who was thrown into a fire, along with her baby, after her husband tried to escape from troops forcing him to work on the project. The baby died and she suffered burns. Other villagers reported being beaten, tortured, raped, and otherwise mistreated when the alleged slave labor conditions were occurring. In 1996, human rights activists brought a lawsuit against Unocal in the United States on behalf of 13 Myanmar villagers who had fled to refugee camps in Thailand. The suit claimed that Unocal was aware of what was going on, even if it did not participate or condone it, and that awareness was enough to make Unocal in part responsible for the alleged crimes. The QB) MBA-203 5 presiding judge dismissed the case on the grounds that Unocal could not be held liable for the actions of a foreign government against its own people—although the judge did note that Unocal was aware of what was going on in Myanmar. The plaintiffs appealed, and in late 2003 the case wound up at a superior court. This time, thé plaintiffs’ legal strategy hinged upon the use of a law that had been on the books since 1792 but was largely ignored for 200 years. Known as the Alien Tort Claims Act (ATCT) of 1792, this law allows foreigners to sue each other in U.S. courts. The ATCT law is being used to allow the foreign plaintiffs to sue the Myanmar subsidiary of Unocal for damages. In December, 2004, Unocal settled the lawsuit out of court and the two sides announced “although the terms are confidential, the settlement in principle will compensate plaintiffs and provide funds enabling plaintiffs and their representatives to develop programs to improve living conditions, health care, and education and protect the rights of people from the pipeline region. These initiatives will provide substantial assistance to people who may have suffered ‘hardships in the region. te ' P.T.O. @) MBA-203 6 Unocal reaffirms its principle that the company respects human rights in all of its activities and ‘commits to enhance its educational programs to further this principle. For this reason, the.company has contacted a markct research agency and they plan to develop a telephone survey of a Polish population representative sample. P.T.O. (5) MBA-205 4 Things were not always rosy at the plant. Productivity and quality were not good. Neither were labour management relations. Workers hid defective parts so management would not find them and when machines broke down, workers would simply sit down until sooner or later same one came to fix it. All that changed in the late, 1980s. Faced with the possibility that the plant would be shut down; management and labour worked together to find a way to keep the plant open. The way was to increase productivity; producing more without using more resources. Interestingly the improvement in productivity did not come by spending money on fancy machines. Rather, it was accomplished by placing more emphasis on quality. That was a shift from the old way; which emphasized volume often at the expense of quality. To motivate workers the company agreed to gain- sharing a plan that rewarded workers by increasing their pay for productivity increases. After joining the company, Mr. Alok represented to the management that he should be granted at least three advance increments since in the government research organizations where he had worked, he used to get extra honorarium to the extent of Rs, 50,000 per annum for undertaking outside consultancy work. The management of the company refused to grant the P.T.O. ay MBA-201 4 advanced -increment to him since they felt that Mr. Ashok’s request cannot be dealt with in violation and it will lead to similar requests from other senior managers in the company. After waiting for a few months, Mr. Alok submitted his resignation from the company. His superior, viz., the Functional Director concerned (Mr. Rajeev), " advised the Managing Director that Mr. Alok was resigning because his request for higher salary has not been agreed to and that the matter needs review because it would be difficult to recruit another expert of the same caliber as Mr. Alok. The Managing Director, however, accepted the resignation of Mr. Alok and ordered that the post be advertised for fresh recruitment. As the recruitment process was on, Mr. Alok, on his own, choose to withdraw his resignation and rejoined the company apparently on a tacit undertaking given by Mr. Rajeev that his request for higher salary would be considered. The Managing Director considered the request and approved the grant for three advanced increments to Mr. Alok provided he would serve the company at least till the date of his superannuating, which was two years away. The decision was communicated to Mr. Alok. a MBA-201 5 Mr. Alok once again felt insulted by being asked to agree to the inacceptable condition, viz., undertaking to continue in the company for two moré years for the grant of additional increments to his salary, he thought he was fully justified in this case. The Managing Director stated that in return for the additional salary being granted to Mr. Alok which was not being given to any other senior manager of his status, he should display some commitment, to serve the company. Without. such a commitment Mr. Alok might wait for an opportunity to look for greener pastures and leave the company after gaining a higher salary, viz-a-viz his other senior colleagues in the organization.
