RASiK DECK
(a classik twist to a classik stack)

Created By

UNKNOWN MENTALIST

INTRODUCTION

A Shocked Duchess became Si Stebbins’ Karma (Destiny). If Si Stebbins would

have learnt the Karma Deck this would have been the result. The RASIK DECK is
the surprising result of applying the KARMA DECK principle to the age old Si
Stebbins stack. And added to this is a novel method of using existing suit systems
to create a random suit sequence. So the final end result is a fabulously refreshing
stack with many rich possibilities and multiple potential. This is flexible enough to
either fit well in your existing KARMA DECK bouquet or stand out as a fully
independent stack by itself. The word RASIK has its origin in the ancient Sanskrit
language. It means “CONNOISSEUR”. And, in the true tradition of the KARMA
DECK, this too is a deck for the ‘connoisseur’ of stack magic.

SI STEBBINS STACK

The mathematical nature of values and the cyclical nature of suits in the Si
Stebbins stack clearly suggest the existence of a pattern even to a casual
observer. So by applying the Karma Deck principle to Si Stebbins stack, a new
stack RASIK DECK is created which is more random looking in values than Si
Stebbins and does not have the alternating red/black suit pattern (if you choose
to take that option). So in a way the RASIK DECK is a more randomized avatar of
the age old (older than Si Stebbins actually) Si Stebbins stack.
APPLYING KARMA DECK PRINCIPLE TO SI STEBBINS

If you are not already aware, the Karma Deck principle is nothing but my
innovative and totally unique ‘clock principle’. Now let’s apply this principle to the
Si Stebbins stack. Imagine the round dial face of a clock with the hours from 1 to
12. Now start with 1 i.e ace. And like in Stebbins, go on adding 3, till you circle the
clock face. So you get A, 4, 7, 10. Here if you add 3 more to 10, it becomes 13 and
goes beyond the clock face which has hours till 12 only. So you stop with 10. Now
start with 2 and do the same process. You will get 2, 5, 8, J. Finally start with 3 and
with the same process you get 3, 6, 9, Q. So your final value stack will be A, 4, 7,
10, 2, 5, 8, J, 3, 6, 9, Q, K (King is the only one left out so you add him as the 13th
card in the first bank of RASIK DECK.) This same stack sequence of 13 card values
repeats 3 more times to complete the RASIK DECK. Now to this value stack you
can apply the standard red/black alternating suit systems like CHaSeD or SHoCkeD
or DuCHeS etc. Or you can give my innovative suit system, given below, a try.

AN INNOVATIVE SUIT SYSTEM

If you observe carefully, in each bank of 13 cards in the RASIK DECK, there are 4
clear mini sets or sub-sets. A, 4, 7, 10 is one set. 2, 5, 8, J is second set. 3, 6, 9, Q is
the third set and the loner K comprises the fourth set. Apply the well known
SHoCkeD suit system to the first and third sets in the first bank. And apply the
other well known DuCHeS suit system to the second and fourth sets in the first
bank. In subsequent 3 banks, apply the same suit systems but vertically.
So the final RASIK DECK looks like this. This is much more random than Si Stebbins
in terms of values as well as suit sequence.

AS 4H 7C 10D 2D 5C 8H JS 3S 6H 9C QD KD
AH 4C 7D 10S 2C 5H 8S JD 3H 6C 9D QS KC
AC 4D 7S 10H 2H 5S 8D JC 3C 6D 9S QH KH
AD 4S 7H 10C 2S 5D 8C JH 3D 6S 9H QC KS

This RASIK DECK STACK is represented as a visual mnemonic in the following

diagram. If you combine the value on the clock face with the suit in the first circle
after the clock face, you get the stack in the first bank of RASIK DECK. Similarly if
you combine the value on the clock face with the suit in the second circle after
the clock face, you get the stack in the second bank of RASIK DECK and so on. Just
remember that the 13th, 26th, 39th and 52nd cards are KD, KC, KH & KS respectively.
And in each of the 4 banks the sequence of the subsets is first RED cards, then
BLUE cards, then GREEN cards and finally YELLOW cards (these are the loner king
cards given below the image in black strip). Also, RED & GREEN sub-set cards are
in SHoCkeD suit order whereas BLUE & YELLOW sub-set cards are in DuCHeS suit
order.
SMART IMAGE
SMART TIPS

1. Each bank of 13 cards starts with one and ends with thirteen, i.e, starts with
ace and ends with king.

2. The first sub-set of 4 cards in each bank starts with ace (one). The second
sub-set starts with two and the third sub-set starts with three in each bank.

3. The fourth sub-set in each bank is a ‘single card sub-set’ that is the king.

4. After each double digit number (10, 11, 12 or 10, J, Q) a new subset starts.

5. Also, each double digit number is the last number of that particular sub-set.

6. The first bank of 13 cards is the key to the entire stack. The value stack of
the first bank repeats in the other 3 banks. And from the suits of the cards
in the 1st bank, the suits of the cards in the other 3 banks can be arrived at.

SMART ACTIONS

1. RASIK DECK enables you to know the card at any number in the stack.

2. RASIK DECK enables you to know the position of any card in the stack.

3. RASIK DECK enables you to know the card before and after any given card.
SMART EXAMPLES

1. How to know the card when a number is given ? For example, 32 is given.
You can immediately see that this number belongs to the 3rd bank. Now
subtract 26 from 32 (the rule is – subtract highest possible number from 13,
26 or 39). The result is 6. The 6th card in the first bank is 5C (which is in the
second sub-set with DuCHeS). So your target card at 32 is 5S.

2. How to know the position when a card is given ? For example, 9H is given.
You immediately refer the position and suit of 9 in the first bank. This is 9C
which is at 11th position (in the 3rd subset with SHoCkeD). So 9C has to be in
the 4th bank. So 11+39 = 50, is the position of 9H.

3. How to know the card subsequent to a given card ? For example, 8D is

given. The value of next card is 8+3 = J(11) and since this is in 2nd sub-set
with DuCHeS, the suit is C. So it is JC.

4. The exceptions to no. 3 above will be all double digit numbers like 10, J(11),
Q(12), K(13), in other words 10’s and picture cards. For 10s, Js & Qs, the
subsequent cards will be 2s, 3s & Ks respectively (i.e the first cards in next
sub-sets). The subsequent suits for 10s, Js & Qs will be “same suits” for first
and third banks but “same colour different suits” for the second and fourth
banks. For all kings, the subsequent cards are the first cards of the next
bank respectively.

SMART PRACTICE

A hour of practice should be enough to make you proficient in this RASIK DECK
system. Of course more practice will never do any harm.
SMART FACT

A special person needs a special mention here. I don’t know him. But I came to
know recently that he was the original creator of the Si Stebbins stack as we know
it today, way back in 1895 and Si Stebbins himself learnt it from him. A Syrian
magician by name Selim Cid. My hearty compliments to him (posthumously). May
the magic world recognize his contribution. Although belatedly.

SMART HISTORY

The history of the origin of the Si Stebbins stack as we know it today is very
surprising and interesting. The earliest known reference of a mathematical stack
where the sequence increases by any fixed number like say 3 or 4 or 5 etc. is
found from the 12th century in medieval India. In those days, there was a very
popular game, played by royalty and commoners alike, called “DASHAVATAR
GANJIFA”. This game was played with 120 cards and required a minimum of 3
players. There were 10 suits with 12 cards in each suit. The ten suits represented
the ten avatars or incarnations of the Hindu God Vishnu. And the 12 cards in each
suit represented the 12 zodiac signs. These cards were made of various materials
like wood, stiffened cloth, palm leafs, clay tablets. The shape was either round or
rectangle. And each “card” in this set of 120 was hand painted with images
depicting the ten avatars and the twelve zodiac signs. Some of the variations of
this game required the deck of 120 cards to be stacked in increasing value of 3 or
4 or 5 depending on the number of players playing the game.
