Exercise 05

———————————————————————————————————–
Instructions:

a. Answer ALL the questions.

b. Your answers for the confidence intervals should contain all of the following items:

• the point estimator,

• the reliability coefficient(s),
• the formula of the confidence interval,
• the boundary values.

b. Your answers for the hypothesis tests should contain all of the following items:

• the hypotheses,
• the test statistic formula and its value,
• the degrees of freedom of the test statistic,
• the critical value(s) of the test,
• the conclusion of the test.

c. All numbers in your answers should have at least 4 significant figures / digits.

d. The significance level of all statistical tests is 0.05 unless it is given.

1. A new 8-bit microcomputer chip has been developed that can be reprogrammed
without removal from the microcomputer. A sample of 15 results of experiments of
the time for a byte to be programmed are shown in the following table.

11.6 14.7 12.9 13.3 13.2

13.1 14.2 15.1 12.5 15.3
13.3 13.4 13.0 13.8 12.3

If a byte of memory can be programmed in less than 13.25 seconds, it is called a

fast-cycle.

(a) Construct a 95% confidence interval for the population mean of the time for a
byte of memory to be programmed.
(b) It is claimed that the population mean of the time for a byte to be programmed
is less than 14 seconds. Test whether the claim is correct.
(c) Construct a 95% confidence interval for the population variance of the time for
a byte to be programmed.
(d) Test whether the variance of the time for a byte to be programmed is greater
than 1 second.
(e) Construct a 95% confidence interval for the population proportion of fast-cycle.

1
(f) Test whether the proportion of fast-cycle is greater than 40%.
(g) Find the p-value of the test statistic in (f).

2. A study of report writing by engineers is conducted. A scale that measures the intel-
ligibility of engineers’ English is devised. This scale, called an “index of confusion”,
is devised so that low scores indicate high readability. These data are obtained on
articles randomly selected from engineering journals and from unpublished reports
written in 2010:

Journals
1.79 1.75 1.67 1.65 1.87 1.74 1.94
1.62 2.06 1.33 1.96 1.69 1.70

Unpublished reports
2.39 2.51 2.86 2.14 2.56 2.29 2.49
2.36 2.58 2.33 2.62 2.41 1.94

(a) Test at 0.1 significance level whether the variances of two populations are the
different.
(b) Based on the result of (a), test whether the means of two populations are
different.
