10
The symbols of the story comes from Yogi Raman’s Mystical Fable, he narrated an
extraordinary but confusing fable to Julian and told that it comprises of 7 timeless Virtues of
life, explained through different symbols. The whole of the Novel revolves around these
symbols and tries to comprehend the importance of them for a peaceful and joyful life.

5.1 The Garden

The lush green garden in the fable is symbol for mind, full of beautiful thoughts and
creative ideas. Our mind grows what we sow; if we plant optimistic thoughts and ideas,
we will receive sweet fruits of peace and tranquility, whereas, dumping toxic waste will
result in negativity and mental disturbance. The author conveys that the mind is a man’s
greatest gift and should be taken care of properly. One should learn the technique to
master his or her mind and nurture it with positive thoughts, the outcome of the thinking
process is completely based upon the input of thoughts. If you want to live your life to the
fullest, stand guard to the gate of your mind and don't allow negative thoughts to enter. If
there is a lack in your life it is just because of lack in your thoughts. 5 Learn to control your
mind and thoughts, just be the master of your mind.

5.2 The Lighthouse

It symbolizes goals and aims in an individual’s life and explains the power of oneself. The
lighthouse shows the right path to the sailing ships, similarly, we need to choose or create
the right path for ourselves and aim to walk on the same path with full determination, until
we reach our destination. Set your goals, know them and divert all your potential power in
achieving these goals. Lasting happiness comes from steadily working to accomplish your
goals and advancing confidently in the direction of your life’s purpose. This is the secret
to kindling the inner fire that lurks within you.6

It denotes Kaizen, a Japanese term meaning- Continuous change for better. The Sumo
Wrestler has achieved his current state of energy and muscularity through a long process
of self-improvement, and it is denoted for highlighting the importance of self-
introspection. Master yourself to be the master of your destiny; in the words of author,
self-mastery is the DNA of life mastery. Success begins when you believe in yourself and
redirect all your inner strength towards the goal.  Challenge yourself and don't restrict
your limits. Identify the things holding you back. Once you have identified what your
weaknesses are, next is to face them and attack them. Fears are nothing more than a
negative consciousness.7 Overcome every fear and every obstacle that comes in your path
of success. Success comes to those who are worth it, know your worth and you can
conquer the world.

5.4 The Wire Cable

The pink wire cable tied around the waist of the giant Sumo Wrestler, covering just his
private part, represents discipline and will power. The tiny thin wires of metal when bind
together form a strong wire of iron, similarly small actions result in great results. Thus,
Discipline is the essence of life, it is built by consistent performance of small acts of
courage and bravery. Willpower is the ability that helps you do what you want to do, you
are able to get up early on a cold morning to perform your exercise just because your
willpower calls you to awake. These two principles are the means to freedom, a
determined and skilled human is set free from all the ties that clutches him and apart him
from his ultimate goals.

5.5 The Golden Stopwatch

Clearly, the watch depicts the importance of time in an individual’s life. Time is the
most precious but non-renewable commodity we own, respect you time and it will
respect you back. It can be done through sorting out your priorities and maintaining a
balance between times to perform each task of daily life.  Don't make your life hectic by
saying you lack time because the thing you lack is just managing the time. Just take the
time for all those things that makes you happy and simplify your life. 8 Have a ‘Deathbed

Mentality’, consider every day to be your last day so that you can live it to the fullest
and make the most out of the day.

5.6 The Flowers

The Flowers, the yellow roses in Yogi Raman’s fable represent the significance of
kindness and nobility for a better life. The Chinese proverb- ‘A Little bit of Fragrance
always clinches to the hands that gives roses.’ Is absolutely true to explain the meaning
of this symbol. The quality of our life automatically improves when we contribute in the
betterment of other’s life. Giving more to life and to your community is a paradigm-
shifting perspective from the “self” mentality of survival of the fittest.9

5.7 The Path of Diamonds

The diamonds in the fable emphasizing the need to live in present, embrace the moment
without any worries of past or future. Live like it’s now or never, enjoy every step of
the journey and never sacrifice your present happiness for some future accomplishment.
Past was a lesson to be learned and future is an experienced to be gained, present is the
gift of nature which needs to be savored. You will always regret the time you could
have spent with your family or friends, once it is gone, so grab the current happiness
and live in the moment. This is the ultimate secret of joy.

6 THEMES

9
Sharma, Robin. “7 Awesome Life Lessons from The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari”, 2019. Mindvalley,
https://blog.mindvalley.com/life-lessons-the-monk-who-sold-his-ferrari/

13
6.1 Search for purpose of life
The main idea of the novel is to know the real meaning and purpose of human life to
achieve a peaceful and stable lifestyle. The protagonist, Julian Mantle encounters a heart-
attack which changes his point of view of life completely. He realizes that all the leisure
in the world actually failed to provide him inner peace and joy, his physical as well as
psychological emptiness and dullness impels him to search for the genuine meaning of
this human life. The story tries to highlight that how a common-man today, has become
so busy in collecting and achieving materialistic things that he has lost his genuine
purpose of life. We are unfamiliar with our intent of life and end up choosing the wrong
path. The author describes the path of diamonds as the road to eternal happiness and
contentment, the ultimate goal is to reach the destination of everlasting happiness and
contentment through this path. Thus, the theme is concentrated on Julian’s search for
self-enlightenment.

6.2 Leadership
Being an expert leadership speaker, the idea becomes an important component of Robin
Sharma’s writing and work. The core focus is upon being your own leader and shape your
life in the way you want. The only necessary condition remains that the individual knows
his goals, the process of self-enlightenment clearly defines the objectives of be achieved
and leadership is required just to act for achieve that individual goals as well as
encouraging the people around you to be an achiever. Leadership begins with in the
individual .One should see the world how the person leads the lives in their personal lives.
One should not settle for mediocrity rather than attaining mastery.10

14
7.1 Be a Learner
The author believes in learning, it is the continuous proceeds of acquiring knowledge that
enhances the quality of life. The story repeatedly encourages the readers to be a learner
and gain all the fruitful knowledge from this text. Julian asks John to keep his cup empty,
while listening to the wisdom of Monks; a cup which is already full cannot put more into
itself and will overflow, that mean the knowledge will go unutilized. To be a good
speaker, one needs to be a good listener; try to grab every word of wisdom you hear. The
only and best way to be able to open your mind, adopt new thoughts, and bring a better
change to your current position in life is to empty your cup.11 Failure in emptying your
cup is a feature of under-nourished mind, develop a sense of acquiring and re-gaining
knowledge, challenge the facts and find out the reason behind every stated deeds.

7.2 Principle of Simplicity

The power of simplicity is above all the multifaceted and complicated things in the
world. The simplest things hides the biggest secrets, just like, this simple text inculcated
some most beautiful thoughts in the reader’s mind. The fable, that carries the 7 Virtues of
life was consider to be very complex and meaningless to John, however, when he
comprehends the deep meaning within, it was the simplest thing. It’s easy for us to
encounter complicated things to make ourselves feel smart and justify is as a challenge,
but what this book teaches us is that complexity is the enemy we should try to avoid. 12
Complexities and complications create difficulties for a man, thus, simple living and
thinking provides the best lifestyle to the human being.

15
The novel is itself the story of a litigation lawyer who turned to be a Monk with the mission
of spreading the ancient wisdom and knowledge regarding the Principles and Objectives of
Life. It establishes and mentions certain direct and indirect relations with law, as a subject
matter. The author mentions about the principle of discipline, whereas, in the society the
rules established to maintain discipline are many times discarded as conventional and have
been ignored. At times, the misuse of available facilities and opportunities is justified as
Willpower and freedom. We as the people of society fail to comprehend the actual meaning
of these ideas and end up exploiting the laws and rules.

The teachings of the monks are universal for every individual, they tend to enlighten every
soul and mind, and however, there exists some religious disparities and belief. People from
different religions might consider these monks to be the worshippers of Hindu gods and
Goddess, as a result of this notion they are reluctant towards these ideas and Principles. The
laws established to ensure Religious Equalities prove to be a failure here as the people of the
State are not willing to change their conventional ideology.

9 CRITICAL APPRAISAL

16
The author gracefully pens down the ideologies of wiser men towards the life, the novel is a
beautiful blend of varying significant ideas and thoughts that keeps the reader’s eyes glued to
the text and provides the sense of inspiration and motivation to the individual reader. It is a
good read with a very wonderful storyline, linking of ideas with one and other keeps the
reader attached to the story.

However, at some points the author speaks contrasting ideas which creates a confusion.
Talking about secret of Happiness Julian says ‘find out what you truly love to do and then
direct all of your energy towards doing it.’ But, the irony lies in, as a young lawyer he was
passionate about law, the challenges and reasoning of law would entertain him a lot;
however, once he achieved all the worldly prestigious and reputation, his passion turned into
a burden for him and was the reason for his deteriorating mental and physical health. These
ironical ideas leaves the reader in bewilderment.

Explaining the principle of Selfless Service, the author tries to encourage the readers to live
for others and contribute in the betterment of the society and community. On the
contradictory part, he says do not care about what others think, live life your way. This is
another complementary idea stated here. Ignoring these contradictions, the novel is overall a
very motivating and inspirational text with simple content. It would be a wonderful read for
the individuals seeking some inspirations and betterment in their life style.
