Objective : Preparation of Lead Chromate (PbCrO4)

Apparatus: Gelatin paper, weighing machine, measuring cylinder, beaker,
Funnel, filter paper, conical flask, watch glass

Reagents : Lead acetate= 5.2 gm

Potassium dichromate=2.4 gm
Acetic acid
Distill water

Principle : Lead chromate is insoluble in water and it is obtained by double

decomposition method. It is also known as Chrome yellow and used
as a pigment. The lead is precipitated as chrome with potassium
chromate solution, in a medium buffered with a mixture of acetic acid
and lead acetate.

Reaction : ( CH3COO)2Pb + K2CrO4 -------- PbCrO4 + 2CH3COOK

Structure:

Figure: Ionic form of lead chromate

Procedure: 1. Dissolve 5.2 gm of lead acetate in 50 ml of distill water.
2. Add dilute acetic acid to the lead acetate solution ( to avoid
turbidity due to hydrolysis).
3. Also dissolve 2.4 gm of potassium dichromate in 50ml of water
Then add potassium dichromate solution to that of lead salt in
small quantities with constant stirring.
4. Allow the precipitate of lead chromate to settle down.
5. Wash the precipitate by 3-4 times and then filter on the filter
Paper supported in a funnel.
6. Dry the precipitate.

Result : The yellow color Lead chromate are obtained. The weight of salt is
5.15 gm obtained.

Precaution: 1. Handle the glasswares carefully.

2. Avoid direct contact of chemicals into the skin.
