PROBLEM: A reinforced concrete beam has a width of 300mm

and an effective depth to the tension reinforcement of 618mm.
Compression reinforcement if required will be placed at a depth
of 60mm from extreme compression fiber. If f’c = (20+ N/5)MPa
and fy = (400 + N)MPa and the beam is to support a moment of
Mu = 650kN.m.,

1. Prove that the beam will be designed as singly reinforced

only if:

a. the maximum tension steel reinforcement ratio is

0.75 of the computed balanced steel reinforcement
ratio.

b. the maximum tension steel reinforcement ratio is

determined when the strain of steel = 0.005 at same
time that concrete strain is = 0.003.

Hint; required area of tension steel reinforcement must be

less than maximum steel reinforcement area.

2. Compute the tension steel reinforcement area in sq.mm.

3. Compute the minimum tension reinforcement area in sq.mm.

4. How many 28 mm diameter bars are needed for the beam?
