2019 MacRostie Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

ORIGIN: The grapes for this Pinot Noir came from a handful of top vineyards
throughout the Sonoma Coast AVA, with a focus on some of the finest sub-appella-
tions within the region. The blend includes grapes from our Thale’s Estate Vineyard
in the heart of the Russian River Valley, Dale Ricci Vineyard in Carneros, as well as
a number of the Sangiacomo’s prized vineyards. Due to the cool coastal influences
that shape the climate at all of these sites, they produce amazing Pinot Noir. At the
same time, the diversity of the vineyards creates the foundation for complex aromat-
ics and beautifully layered flavors in the final blend.
VINEYARD NOTES: 2019 was a remarkable growing season for most of Sonoma
County, with ample winter rainfall creating wet soils and cool temperatures that
delayed budbreak in some areas. Spring and summer brought moderate to slightly
above-average temperatures, with late-May rains slightly delaying flowering, while
helping to produce the smaller, looser clusters that produce extremely flavorful and
concentrated wines. Grapes were harvested by hand between September 4th and
September 25th of 2019.
WINEMAKING NOTES: The majority of the grapes were destemmed into
small-lot fermenters to capture the uniqueness of each site. About 15% of our fruit
was fermented with whole clusters to add fruit aromas and rich complexity to the
final wine. Following a two-week fermentation on the skins, the wine was drained
and put into French oak barrels for ten months of aging. While 33% new French oak
was used to accentuate the structure and color of the wine, and to add mid-palate
richness, we took care with the new oak and toast levels to not overwhelm the delicate
aromas of this fine coastal Pinot Noir. Bottling took place on August 31st of 2020.
TASTING NOTES: With a lovely light ruby color and enticing aromas of cocoa,
red currant, fig and bramble, this wine beautifully embodies its cool-climate roots.
On the palate, it is impeccably balanced, with an inviting entry offering flavors of
plum, red berries, cola, button mushroom and earthy minerality. Displaying both
supple tannins and bright acidity, this is a wonderfully versatile wine for pairing with
array of cuisines.
